No — and any that claims to is overselling. Algae eaters reduce and manage algae, but they can't fix the underlying causes: excess light, excess nutrients and infrequent maintenance. Treat them as helpers alongside sensible lighting periods, water changes and not overfeeding, not as a substitute for them.

Which algae eaters should I avoid?

The common pleco (grows to 40-60 cm and produces huge waste) and the Chinese algae eater (becomes aggressive and stops eating algae as it matures). Both are sold small and cause problems later. Stick to bristlenose plecos, otocinclus, nerites and Amano shrimp, which stay useful and suitably sized.
