The malawi cichlid known as Melanochromis cyaneorhabdos—commonly called the Maingano cichlid—is one of Lake Malawi's most visually striking mbuna species. This electric-blue gem, endemic to the rocky shores around Likoma Island, reaches approximately 9cm at maturity and delivers bold coloration, lively personality, and classic rock-dwelling behaviour. With its vivid blue body adorned with contrasting black horizontal stripes, the Maingano is instantly recognisable and highly sought after by African cichlid enthusiasts. Available for sale UK through specialist suppliers, Melanochromis cyaneorhabdos is an excellent choice for experienced keepers who can provide spacious, hard-water African cichlid setups and manage its assertive temperament.
Melanochromis cyaneorhabdos is a visual showstopper. Mature males display an electric-blue body overlaid with bold black horizontal stripes running from head to tail—a striking pattern that intensifies in dominant, healthy individuals. Females and juveniles exhibit slightly less vivid coloration but still showcase the characteristic blue-and-black striping. The body is deep and muscular, with a pronounced forehead and strong jaw adapted for grazing algae from rock surfaces. Coloration is most vivid in well-maintained, hard-water aquariums with appropriate diet and stable chemistry.
Endemic to Lake Malawi in East Africa, Melanochromis cyaneorhabdos is specifically associated with the rocky shores around Likoma Island. The species inhabits rocky substrates at depths of 5-10 metres, where it grazes aufwuchs (algae and microorganisms) and defends small territories. Lake Malawi's ancient, stable water chemistry—hard, alkaline, and mineral-rich—has shaped every aspect of the species' biology. Strong water movement, high oxygenation, and complex rockwork characterise these rift lake environments.
A minimum 200-litre aquarium is essential to accommodate the species' semi-aggressive to aggressive temperament and territorial behaviour. Construct the aquascape using abundant Malawi-style rockwork—such as Texas holey rock, tufa, or similar—to create numerous caves, hiding spots, and line-of-sight breaks. Use coral sand or crushed coral substrate to naturally buffer pH and hardness. Strong water movement from powerheads or high-flow filtration mimics natural conditions and ensures excellent oxygenation. Bright lighting encourages natural algae growth for grazing. Avoid soft-water plants; focus on robust hardscape.
Melanochromis cyaneorhabdos requires hard, alkaline water typical of Lake Malawi. Maintain temperatures between 24-28°C and pH from 7.5-8.6, with high hardness levels. Excellent filtration is essential; this active species produces significant bioload and is sensitive to nitrate accumulation. Perform regular partial water changes with appropriately buffered water to maintain stable chemistry. High oxygenation and vigorous water movement support optimal health and coloration.
This omnivore/algae grazer requires primarily algae-based foods. Offer spirulina flakes/pellets and other quality prepared foods with occasional small meaty foods. Avoid high-protein diets to reduce digestive issues such as bloat. Feed multiple small meals daily, removing uneaten food promptly. Natural algae growth on rocks provides valuable supplemental grazing and should be encouraged.
Melanochromis cyaneorhabdos is an aggressive, territorial mbuna. Males establish and vigorously defend territories, particularly during breeding, and can be highly assertive toward conspecifics and similar-looking species. Aggression can be intense, so provide adequate rockwork to break sightlines and carefully select compatible tankmates. The species is active, constantly patrolling, grazing rock surfaces, and interacting with its environment.
Suitable companions include other robust Lake Malawi mbuna of similar size and temperament. Some larger, non-aggressive Malawi cichlids may be tolerated in very spacious tanks. Avoid peaceful community fish, small fish, shrimp and other invertebrates, slow-moving or long-finned fish, and other highly aggressive mbuna unless the tank is very large and carefully managed.
Melanochromis cyaneorhabdos is a maternal mouthbrooder. A male will court a female over rockwork, displaying intense coloration and elaborate behaviour. After spawning, the female collects eggs in her mouth and incubates them for about three weeks before releasing free-swimming fry. Fry can be raised on finely crushed spirulina-based foods and quality fry pellets. Provide rockwork and multiple hiding places to reduce stress on brooding females.
