Before you choose from this collection

Compare Nerite snails by their stated identity and shell form, then check the supplied size, sale unit and current price on the listing. Zebra, Tiger and Horned are useful trade descriptions, not a guarantee that every snail has identical needs.

‘Nerite snail’ is a trade umbrella across several Neritidae taxa, not one species with one set of requirements. Commonly sold tropical forms may lay egg capsules while a self-sustaining population is generally unlikely in an ordinary freshwater aquarium, but lifecycle, food and water needs remain species-specific.

Many Neritidae graze biofilm and some attached algae, but no animal is a guaranteed algae cure. Choose a quantity for the identified animal, mature food-bearing surface, aquarium stability and existing grazers rather than following a fixed snail-per-litre formula.

Frequently asked questions

Females may lay pale egg capsules on hard surfaces. For many commonly traded Nerite species, larval development needs brackish or marine conditions, so a self-sustaining freshwater population is generally unlikely; species and conditions vary. Choose numbers for the exact aquarium and available food rather than using a fixed snail-per-litre rule.
Nerites are non-predatory grazers, but that does not make every pairing safe. Avoid fish known to attack or eat snails, confirm water and medication compatibility for all livestock, and check the exact species guidance before adding one.
Nerites can remain still for long periods and some move above the waterline. Check temperature and tested water quality, make sure the aquarium offers suitable natural grazing, and confirm the snail is not being harassed. If it remains unresponsive or you are unsure, seek species-specific advice rather than repeatedly disturbing an attached snail.
Nerites graze biofilm, diatoms and some algae from hard surfaces, but results depend on the species, aquarium and available growth. They may leave visible egg capsules, and larvae of many trade species generally need brackish or marine conditions to develop, so freshwater populations usually do not establish.
There is no evidence-backed universal litres formula. Decide from the identified animal, mature food-bearing surface, aquarium stability, companions and existing grazers; begin conservatively and keep checking that suitable food remains available. Nerites can support maintenance but do not replace it.
