Frequently asked questions
They're separate species. Endlers (Poecilia wingei) are smaller — males around 3.5 cm — slimmer, faster-moving, and wear blocky neon colour panels rather than the guppy's big flowing tail. The two will crossbreed readily, which is why we label true wingei lines and hybrids separately.
Males of established strains like tiger and blue start at about £4 each. Scarcer collector lines and pre-matched breeding trios cost more — santa maria trios have topped £50 when available. Everything listed below is live current stock, priced per fish or per set as stated.
Genuinely, yes — among the easiest tropical fish full stop. They accept a wide pH range (6.5-8.5), thrive in hard tap water, need only a 30-litre tank, and eat any small food. Give them 22-28°C, a cycled filter and some plant cover and they simply get on with it.
Yes, freely — and the offspring are fertile, which permanently mixes the lines. If you care about keeping a pure wingei strain, never house them with fancy guppies. If you just want colourful, active livebearers, hybrids are vigorous and every bit as pretty.
Six or more. An all-male group gives you maximum colour with zero fry and no harassment. If you want to breed, run one male to every two or three females and add dense plants like java moss — females drop a small brood of live fry roughly every four weeks.
Endler's livebearer (Poecilia wingei) is a close wild relative of the fancy guppy, native to the warm coastal lagoons of Venezuela — most famously Laguna de Patos. Like all livebearers in the family Poeciliidae the females give birth to free-swimming fry, and Endlers breed even more readily than guppies. Pure wild-type 'Class N' Endlers are worth seeking out, since the species hybridises so freely with guppies that much sold as 'Endler' is actually a hybrid.
Endlers (Poecilia wingei) are a separate species from the common fancy guppy (Poecilia reticulata). They stay smaller, carry bold metallic wild-type colour rather than long flowing fins, and are generally hardier. The two species interbreed readily, which is why pure Endler lines are labelled by strain and are usually kept apart from fancy guppies.
Keep a group. Males are constantly active and display to one another, so six or more looks natural. If you do not want fry, keep males only; if you do, one male to two or three females spreads the attention. They are peaceful with other small community fish.
