Snails, hermit and other crabs, shrimps, starfish, urchins, tube worms and anemones make very different demands on a marine aquarium. Choose each animal for a suitable habitat and feeding plan, rather than treating the whole range as a ready-made cleaning crew.

The selection includes Sally Lightfoot and Spider Crabs, Harlequin and Camel Shrimps, brittle stars and anemones as well as grazers. Compare the named animal’s diet and behaviour around fish, corals and other invertebrates. A general reef-safe or peaceful label cannot establish that a particular combination will work.

Prepare stable salinity and water quality, suitable space and access to appropriate food before arrival. Read the current delivery, arrival and guarantee terms, and follow handling advice for the selected animal. A mature aquarium still needs feeding, maintenance and observation after adding invertebrates.

Frequently asked questions

Some snails and other grazers consume particular algae or food residues, but the animals here do not share one diet or role. Crabs, shrimp, starfish, urchins and anemones need their own feeding and compatibility assessment. They do not remove the need for filtration, water testing and normal aquarium maintenance.
Compare the current price for the exact animal, size and offer. A grazing snail, a specialist shrimp and a large anemone are different purchases, and the cheapest selection may not suit your aquarium. Prepare any species-specific food and housing before comparing the cost of a group.
Use measured, stable salinity and suitable water conditions for the selected animal. Check that any treatment is appropriate for the invertebrates present and follow its instructions; do not assume a fish treatment is safe for a reef. Stable water alone does not replace the right diet or compatible companions.
First establish stable conditions and a food supply suited to the animal. Choose a named species whose adult requirements you can meet, rather than buying a mixed group to solve a new tank’s algae. Assess delicate or specialist animals separately; an anemone or starfish is not an automatic next step after adding snails.
It depends on the exact combination. Fish may prey on shrimp, while some crabs or other invertebrates may threaten smaller animals or affect corals. Check diet, adult size, shelter and behaviour for every proposed addition. A cleaner-shrimp label does not make all shrimp peaceful or all crabs suitable for a reef.
