Frequently asked questions
Most prefer soft, slightly acidic to neutral water — pH around 6.0-7.5 — reflecting the Amazon and its tributaries. This is the key difference from African rift-lake cichlids, which want hard alkaline water. Dwarf species like Apistogramma especially appreciate soft water and gentle flow.
Dwarf cichlids and young acaras are among the least expensive, electric blue rams and Apistogramma pairs cost more, and premium discus or wild imports cost the most. Prices on this page are live: what you see is what's in stock today.
Many are — dwarf cichlids such as rams and Apistogramma make superb centrepieces for a peaceful planted community, and angelfish suit a community of similarly sized calm fish. Larger species (oscars, green terrors) are better in a dedicated setup. Match the cichlid's adult size and temperament to your tank.
German blue rams and Bolivian rams are popular dwarf choices, though rams want warm, stable, mature water. Keyhole and flag acaras are more forgiving. For a first larger cichlid, a firemouth or convict is hardy. Avoid discus until you have some experience — they are demanding on water quality.
It is possible but not ideal for beginners. Both are tall soft-water cichlids, but discus need warmer water (around 28-30°C) and pristine conditions, while angelfish are hardier and can outcompete discus at feeding time. Keep discus with discus while you learn the species, then experiment later.
