Cichlids are one of the most diverse fish families in the hobby. From tiny apistogrammas to massive oscars, this guide covers the basics of keeping them well.
Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
The Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlid 'Double Red' (Apistogramma cacatuoides) is one of the most colourful and rewarding dwarf cichlids in the hobby — hardy, characterful and far more forgiving than most Apistogramma. The 'Double Red' line intensifies the fiery red edging on the male's spiky, cockatoo-crest dorsal and tail, making a small fish with a huge presence in a planted aquarium.
Males reach around 8cm and are the showpieces: a warm tan body, a tall, jagged dorsal fin raised like a cockatoo's crest, and bold red-orange margins on the dorsal, tail and finnage. Females are smaller and turn an intense buttercup-yellow, especially when guarding fry. Colour peaks when a male is displaying to his harem.
Provide at least 60 litres with a soft substrate, dense planting, wood and a scattering of small caves or coconut shells for spawning. Soft to neutral water (pH 6.0–7.5) at 24–28°C suits it, and gentle flow with some botanicals recreates the leaf-littered Amazon streams it comes from.
Peaceful and best kept as a harem of one male to two or three females, each female holding a small cave territory. It mixes beautifully with calm community fish that occupy the upper water, and only becomes feisty — and fascinatingly so — when a female is defending a brood of fry.
| Great tank mates | Best avoided |
|---|---|
| Small peaceful tetras and rasboras | Larger aggressive cichlids |
| Pencilfish and hatchetfish | Boisterous fast feeders |
| Corydoras and otocinclus | Fin-nippers |
| Dwarf shrimp (in mature tanks) | Other male apistos in small tanks |
An omnivore, it thrives on small foods: quality micro-pellet and flake plus frozen and live brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops and bloodworm. Live and frozen foods bring males into peak colour and condition females for spawning, so vary the diet and feed modest amounts.
A cave-spawning dwarf cichlid, the female lays inside a small cave and tends the eggs and fry with fierce devotion while the male guards the wider territory. In soft, warm water a settled harem breeds readily, and watching a golden female shepherd her fry is one of the great joys of the hobby.
Keep one male with two or three females rather than a single pair — it spreads his attention, reduces stress, and gives you the colourful territorial displays this species is loved for.
