A red colour form of the Amazon’s best-known dwarf cichlid

Agassiz’s Dwarf Cichlid (Apistogramma agassizii) comes from the Amazon basin, where it lives among leaf litter and roots in slow, soft water. The ‘Fire Red’ is an aquarium-bred colour form: the body carries a rosy red back over a pale silvery belly, the head and fins glow orange-gold and the tail and dorsal fin are edged in flame red, with electric-blue marks on the face. FishBase records 4.4 cm standard length; mature males grow larger and longer-finned than females.

What you receive

Choose 3–4 cm or XL, then set the quantity to the number of fish you want. One quantity is one live fish; sex is not guaranteed, so buy several if you hope to form a harem. The size you choose is the size sent, not the adult size.

The photos show this colour form; colour deepens as the fish mature and settle, and males are the most intensely coloured.

Aquarium and water

An aquarium of about 54 litres suits one male and a couple of females; a larger group needs more floor space. Break the floor into territories with caves, roots, plants and a layer of dried leaves, and keep the light soft. Hold the water at 26–27°C, pH 6.0–7.0 and 4–10 dGH, the overlap of FishBase, Seriously Fish and OATA’s dwarf cichlid guidance. Dwarf cichlids are sensitive to nitrate and sudden change, so add them only to a mature aquarium and keep water changes regular and moderate.

Feeding

A micro-predator: feed small frozen and live foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp and Daphnia alongside a quality small granule. Small, varied meals once or twice a day keep colour at its best.

Tank mates and behaviour

Males are territorial, especially when breeding, but rarely harm fish outside their patch. Suitable companions are small, peaceful mid-water fish such as tetras, pencilfish and hatchetfish; bottom-dwellers such as Corydoras work in a larger aquarium with plenty of cover. Avoid boisterous or large fish and other Apistogramma in a small aquarium.

Follow the arrival sequence before releasing the fish

Tropical Fish Co’s delivery and Live Arrival Guarantee policy explains the packing and arrival procedure. Livestock is hand-bagged in pure oxygen and placed in an insulated poly box, with a heat pack when the weather calls for it. Someone must be at the address to receive the parcel because live animals cannot be left unattended.

  1. Receive the parcel in person and start filming before opening it. Show the parcel still sealed with the outer box visible.
  2. Open the parcel in one continuous take. Keep filming until the fish can be seen inside the sealed bag before anything is disturbed.
  3. Float the bag for 20–30 minutes so the temperature equalises slowly.
  4. Do not pour the bag water into the aquarium. Release the fish without adding transport water to the established system.

If a Live Arrival Guarantee claim is required, contact us on the same day with the order number and the continuous unboxing video. Before the parcel arrives, confirm that ammonia and nitrite read zero and that the aquarium matches the water values on this page.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Fire Red a different species?

No. It is an aquarium-bred colour form of Apistogramma agassizii, so care and size are the same as for the species.

Can I choose males or females?

No, sex is not guaranteed. If you want to form one male with several females, buy several fish so the group can sort itself out.

What water does it need?

Keep it at 26–27°C with pH 6.0–7.0 and 4–10 dGH, in a mature aquarium with caves and cover.

How big does it get?

FishBase records 4.4 cm standard length; males grow larger than females and develop longer fins.

What customers say about ordering from us

I have a small group of long finned mountain minnows. So was delighted to be able to order ten of this variety to increase the genetics in my tank . The ones I recieved are healthy but it’s to early to give a verdict on wether they are of a long finned type since they are small currently.

100% success travel and "installation". Pleased with quality of purchase. The Siamese fighter a bit "shy" so have not yet seen him at his best yet but looking good. Happy customer. GG
