A centrepiece is the visual anchor of a tank — typically a single larger, bolder or more colourful fish (or a pair) kept alongside shoaling community fish. Where a shoal provides movement, the centrepiece provides a focal point and character. Gouramis, dwarf cichlids, angelfish and showy plecos are popular choices.
For a peaceful community, a honey or pearl gourami, a dwarf cichlid such as a ram, or a bristlenose pleco all make superb centrepieces. For larger tanks, angelfish or a group of festive rainbowfish work well. Choose one whose adult size and temperament match the fish already in the tank.
Sometimes — a pair of the same species (angelfish, gouramis) can work, and some centrepieces coexist if the tank is large and well planted. But two territorial centrepieces of clashing species often fight. In a normal community tank, one centrepiece is the safe and effective choice.
