Overview

Petrochromis “Kazumbe” from Cape Kabogo is a heavyweight of Lake Tanganyika — a large, powerfully built aufwuchs grazer prized by specialist Rift Lake keepers for its dark good looks and forceful character. The “Kazumbe” population is noted for its blackish base colour, and Cape Kabogo denotes the collection locality along the lake’s rugged eastern shore. This is a fish for experienced aquarists with a large, dedicated Tanganyikan system, not a casual community addition.

Appearance & Identification

Robust and thick-shouldered, this Petrochromis reaches around 25 cm and carries the genus’s trademark broad, fleshy lips and downturned mouth — specialised tools for rasping the algal film, or aufwuchs, from rock surfaces. The “Kazumbe” form shows a deep, sooty-charcoal body that can flush with subtle blue and bronze highlights when a dominant fish is displaying. Males grow larger and more intensely coloured than females.

Aquarium Setup

Think big: 400 litres is an absolute minimum and considerably more is better for a colony. Build an open-topped rockscape of stacked, secure stone to create grazing surfaces and broken sight-lines, over a sand base. Tanganyikan chemistry is essential — hard, alkaline water at pH 7.8–9 and 24–27°C, with powerful filtration and brisk oxygenation to cope with the biological load and the fish’s appetite for oxygen-rich, moving water.

Temperament & Tank Mates

Petrochromis are among the most aggressive of all Tanganyikan cichlids. Keep them as a colony — one male with several females, or a larger group in a spacious tank — so that aggression is spread rather than focused on a single target. Avoid mixing with other Petrochromis or with Tropheus, both because of relentless territorial conflict and the risk of hybridisation. Slow or timid tank mates will be bullied mercilessly.

Feeding

This is a dedicated herbivore built to graze algae. Feed a low-protein, vegetable-based diet of spirulina flake, algae wafers and blanched greens, offered in small amounts several times a day to mimic constant grazing. Its long gut is adapted to plant matter and cannot cope with rich, meaty foods — getting the diet right is the single most important part of keeping this fish healthy.

Breeding

A maternal mouthbrooder, the female incubates the eggs and fry in her mouth for several weeks. Breeding within a settled colony is possible but considered difficult, requiring stable water, a secure hierarchy and impeccable diet to bring fish into condition without triggering digestive problems.
