Are corydoras algae eaters?

No — that's the most common mix-up we see. Corys are scavengers that sift the substrate for leftover food, not algae grazers. They keep the bottom tidy but do nothing about green glass, and they must be fed their own sinking pellets or wafers every day.

How many corydoras should I keep together?

Six or more of the same species — they recognise and school with their own kind, so six bronze corys beats two each of three species. In a proper group they forage confidently in daylight; kept in ones and twos they turn shy and sedentary.

Do corydoras need sand?

Sand is strongly preferred. Corys feed by snuffling their barbels through the substrate, and sharp gravel gradually wears those barbels down to stubs. On soft sand you'll see natural sifting behaviour all day and the barbels stay long and healthy for life — around five years.

Which corydoras species do you stock?

How do corydoras breed?

Corydoras catfish (family Callichthyidae, from South America's Amazon, Orinoco and La Plata basins) are prolific egg-layers. In the classic 'T-position' the female cups the male's milt in her pelvic fins, fertilises a few eggs held there, then sticks them to the glass or plant leaves; the pair repeats this dozens of times. A cool water change often triggers spawning. The eggs hatch in three to five days and the fry forage along the substrate with their sensory barbels.
