Why exact species matters

Corydoras and related cory catfish are often treated as if they all have identical care, but adult size and preferred temperature can differ substantially. Some common species suit cooler tropical water, while others prefer warmer conditions. A mixed assortment therefore cannot responsibly promise one exact temperature or final size for every future fish sold through the same product.

Where possible, identify the fish after purchase using body pattern, fin markings and reliable sources, then refine the long-term care plan around the confirmed species. If exact identity is essential before purchase, contact the shop or choose a named product rather than relying on the assortment.

Aquarium setup

Use a fully cycled aquarium with fine sand or very smooth rounded gravel. Corys spend much of the day searching the substrate with sensitive barbels, so sharp abrasive material is a poor choice. Provide planted edges, wood or shaded cover and open feeding areas.

Around 60 litres can work for smaller common Corydoras groups, but the final aquarium should be chosen after the exact adult species is known. Larger species or mixed communities need more floor area. Horizontal bottom space matters more than height.

Water and filtration

Until the exact species is identified, avoid pushing the aquarium to temperature or chemistry extremes. Keep water stable, mature and well oxygenated. Ammonia and nitrite must remain at zero, and nitrate should be controlled with regular partial water changes.

If adding the fish to an existing aquarium, check the temperature overlap carefully. Do not assume that every Corydoras is suitable for a permanently very warm Discus or Ram setup.

Group behaviour

Corydoras are social fish, but the best group is normally made up of the same species or a clearly compatible close group rather than six unrelated random corys. If this assortment supplies several different identities, do not assume that a mixed selection fully replaces the social needs of each species.

If you want a natural long-term shoal, identify the fish and add compatible individuals of the same species from a named listing where possible.

Feeding

Corydoras are not aquarium vacuum cleaners. Feed deliberate sinking pellets or granules and rotate suitable frozen/live foods such as daphnia, Artemia or bloodworm where appropriate. Make sure food reaches the bottom before faster midwater fish clear the entire meal.

Algae wafers can form part of the wider diet for some species, but visible algae and leftovers are not enough. A hollow abdomen or fish constantly searching without feeding can indicate competition or inadequate food.

Tank mates

Most common Corydoras are peaceful and suit calm community fish whose water requirements overlap. Avoid large predators, aggressive bottom dwellers and species that repeatedly harass the cory group. Long-term compatibility must be checked again once the exact species is known.
