Which livebearer is best for beginners?

Platies are arguably the easiest — hardy, colourful, peaceful and undemanding about water. Guppies are equally popular but some fancy strains are fragile from inbreeding. Mollies are great but grow larger and want harder water. Any of them make an excellent first tropical fish in a cycled, heated tank.

How do I stop livebearers from breeding?

Keep one sex only — a group of all males still gives you the full colour range with zero fry, and males are generally the more colourful sex. In a mixed group, breeding is basically unavoidable: females can store sperm and produce several broods from a single mating.

Do livebearers need special water?

Most livebearers prefer slightly hard, neutral-to-alkaline water, which suits much of the UK's tap water well. Mollies in particular want harder water. They are far more forgiving than soft-water species like discus, which is a big part of why they are recommended for beginners.
