Livebearers are fish that give birth to fully formed, free-swimming fry instead of laying eggs. The group includes guppies, Endlers, mollies, platies and swordtails — all in the family Poeciliidae. This breeding style is why they are so easy to propagate and why a mixed-sex group multiplies quickly.
Most livebearers are sold individually at a per-fish price, with fancy guppy strains, sailfin mollies and premium swordtails costing more and show pairs the most. They are among the most affordable tropical fish. Prices on this page are live: what you see is what's in stock today.
Platies are arguably the easiest — hardy, colourful, peaceful and undemanding about water. Guppies are equally popular but some fancy strains are fragile from inbreeding. Mollies are great but grow larger and want harder water. Any of them make an excellent first tropical fish in a cycled, heated tank.
Keep one sex only — a group of all males still gives you the full colour range with zero fry, and males are generally the more colourful sex. In a mixed group, breeding is basically unavoidable: females can store sperm and produce several broods from a single mating.
Most livebearers prefer slightly hard, neutral-to-alkaline water, which suits much of the UK's tap water well. Mollies in particular want harder water. They are far more forgiving than soft-water species like discus, which is a big part of why they are recommended for beginners.
