How often should I feed aquarium fish?

Once or twice a day, only as much as they clear in a couple of minutes. Overfeeding is the most common cause of poor water quality — uneaten food rots and drives ammonia and algae. Many keepers give fish one small feed a day and a fasting day each week, which suits most community fish well.

What food do bottom-dwelling fish need?

Sinking food — corydoras, loaches and plecos can't compete for floating flake, so they need sinking pellets and wafers that reach the substrate. Plecos also want algae wafers and vegetables. Don't assume bottom-dwellers live on the others' leftovers; feed them their own sinking food directly, ideally after lights-out for shy species.

Do I need special food for fry or nano fish?

Yes — tiny mouths need tiny food. Fry and micro-fish need powdered or crushed foods, baby brine shrimp, or specialist small-particle foods they can actually swallow. Standard flake is too big for them. Livebearer fry take crushed flake and powdered food; egg-layer fry often need infusoria or liquid fry food first.

Are frozen and live foods worth it?

For most fish, yes, as part of a varied diet. Frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp and daphnia bring out natural colour and feeding behaviour and are excellent conditioning foods before breeding. They complement, rather than replace, a staple flake or pellet. Feed them a couple of times a week for noticeably healthier, more vibrant fish.
