Help choosing, not just help buying
An appealing fish is not necessarily the right tank mate. Check adult size, water conditions and social needs before buying. If a detail is unclear, ask us to check it.
Ask AquaAnimals before the sale
Welfare-led dispatch decisions and help planning a suitable home.
Look beyond the label
Follow species references and learn what the care information means.

Read customers’ experiences
Our customer reviews page brings together published product and shop feedback collected through Judge.me. Read the experiences behind the ratings, including critical reviews, and customer photos where they have been shared.
Product feedback and comments about delivery or service answer different questions. Follow the linked listing where available to see what a review concerns, and read our public responses where provided.
Care information you can explore
Supplier information tells us what is being offered. Species databases, specialist fishkeeping references and published research help us examine names, biology and care. Our aim is to help you understand the animal, not simply repeat a sales phrase. References across our care content include the resources below; the sources used for a particular animal are the ones cited on its own page.
A scientific name, adult size and supplied size are different facts. A photograph does not confirm sex, origin or a breeding pair. Use the selected listing and option for those commercial details, and the species-specific care notes to plan an appropriate home.
Where a page cites a research paper or specialist profile, follow that reference to read its context. A study about a wild population or a controlled experiment is not automatically a care recipe for every home aquarium. Tell us if you spot a conflicting value or need a source clarified.
You do not need to be ready to order to use our care guides. Learn about cycling, water quality, feeding and compatibility first. A useful answer may be to prepare the aquarium or choose a different species rather than add another fish today.
Explore the references and what they explain
- FishBase
- Finfish biology, distribution, life history and adult-size information. A recorded wild range is different from a recommended aquarium setting.
- Eschmeyer’s Catalog of Fishes
- Scientific names and synonyms. A name check helps identify a species; it does not establish the identity of a particular supplier strain.
- Seriously Fish
- Species profiles and practical husbandry context, considered alongside the animal’s identity and other references.
- GBIF
- Taxonomy and biodiversity occurrence records. Occurrence records provide context, rather than proof of a fish’s breeding or collection origin.
- IUCN Red List
- Species assessments, habitat and conservation context where an assessment is available.
- WoRMS
- Accepted names and synonyms for marine organisms and other taxa covered by the register.
- OATA care sheets
- Additional practical care guidance from the Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association. Link through to the relevant animal group; requirements differ between species.
- RSPCA fish welfare advice
- Further reading about fish welfare and preparing a suitable home. This is an independent resource, not an endorsement of our shop.
Ask naturally. Keep exploring.
Aqua, our 24/7 Help assistant, lets you type a question or choose a voice conversation. It can search our catalogue, show product cards and help you compare options without making you start a new search for every question. Voice is optional and may be time-limited.
Try a specific request such as “Show me guppies under £15” or “What is the difference between these two fish?” Check the product’s selected size, availability and sale unit before confirming an item and quantity for your basket.
Changed your mind? Ask Aqua to change a quantity or remove an item from your website basket. You stay in control of the purchase: check the basket and complete payment through checkout, not in the conversation.
For an order enquiry, Aqua guides you through the required checks. Our team handles cases that need a person, including arrival concerns. You can also email hello@tropicalfishco.co.uk.
Chat or talk in your language15 languages
Aqua’s website chat and optional voice support English, Welsh, Polish, French, Spanish, Persian, Urdu and Chinese, and more. Start in your preferred language, or ask Aqua to switch.
Voice is optional and time may be limited. Keep species names, selected sizes and order details clear; ask for clarification if a translation is unclear.
Find a fish without knowing every name
Search by a common name or scientific name, or describe what you are looking for to Aqua. Our search uses name matching, related terms and spelling tolerance to make finding a listing easier. Meaning-based search can help with broader requests when available.
Shop filters let you narrow the range by price and care details such as temperament, temperature and tank requirements. A filter is a starting point: read the specific animal’s care information and consider the aquarium you actually have.
Then look beyond the image. Compare adult size, water requirements and social behaviour, alongside the actual size or variation offered. A pair, a single fish and a group are different purchases: the listing and selected option explain what is supplied. An attractive photograph alone does not promise a particular sex or a breeding pair.
Stock and options can change. Open the relevant listing to check availability, select the option you want and confirm the quantity before adding it to your basket. Advice can help you narrow the choice; it cannot guarantee that every combination will work in an aquarium we have not seen.
Make the shop comfortable to use
The shop adapts to phone, tablet and desktop screens. Open the display settings in the site header to change the text size, choose a light or dark theme, increase contrast or reduce animations.
Our care guides and aquarium tools are available to explore before you order. Use them to work through the aquarium’s dimensions, water and stocking needs, then ask for help with anything the available information does not settle.
Welfare comes before dispatch
These are living animals, not ordinary parcels. We check their condition before dispatch. If an animal is not fit to travel, we hold it rather than send it simply to complete a sale.
If a welfare or availability issue affects your order, our team will explain the change and discuss the next steps. We do not want you to discover a substitution or missing animal only when you open the box. Contact us if an order needs clarification.
Your preparation matters too. Have a cycled aquarium ready, check its water conditions and plan appropriate acclimatisation. Read the species guidance and arrival instructions before delivery so you can concentrate on settling the animals in.
Prepare for arrivalClear delivery and arrival support
We use a licensed live-animal courier, oxygen-filled bags, insulated packaging and weather-appropriate heat packs. Check delivery coverage before ordering and the available option and final charge at checkout. Overnight transit starts after dispatch; it does not mean every order placed today arrives tomorrow.
If an animal arrives with a problem, give it appropriate immediate care and contact our team on the day of arrival with your order number and clear photos. An unboxing video can help, but it is optional. The Live Arrival Guarantee page explains how we review a claim and the available next steps.
Good service includes listening
Positive feedback tells us what is helping. Critical feedback shows where we need to improve. Our reviews page includes published experiences and our replies where available, rather than presenting a hand-picked set of compliments here.
If something is wrong, tell our team what happened, which animal or item is involved and your order number. For arrival concerns, include clear photos by email. We can then review the details against the relevant policy and explain the next step. Aqua is an additional way to get help, not a replacement for our responsibility to you.
