Gold Gourami (Trichopodus trichopterus) is the gold colour form of the Three-spot Gourami, a hardy labyrinth fish for aquarists who want a bold, visible community centrepiece. Older trade labels may still use Trichogaster trichopterus, but the care requirement is the same: give this fish space, plant cover and calm access to the surface.
| Scientific name | Trichopodus trichopterus |
|---|---|
| Common name | Gold Gourami / Gold Three-spot Gourami |
| Adult size | Up to around 15 cm |
| Minimum aquarium | 120 litres or larger |
| Temperature | 22-28°C |
| pH | 6.0-8.0 |
| Temperament | Usually calm, but mature males can be territorial |
| Diet | Omnivore: flakes, pellets, frozen foods and vegetable matter |
Use a mature aquarium with gentle to moderate filtration, open swimming room and broken sight lines from plants, wood or tall decor. Floating plants are useful because Gold Gourami spend a lot of time near the surface and breathe air using their labyrinth organ. Keep the tank covered so the air above the water stays warm and humid.
Although hardy, this is not a tiny nano fish. Adults are strong-bodied and can be assertive, especially males. A single fish, a compatible pair or one male with females works best in a spacious planted setup. Avoid squeezing several males into a small aquarium.
Good companions are robust peaceful fish that will not nip fins or compete aggressively at the surface, such as medium barbs, larger peaceful tetras, Corydoras and loaches. Avoid tiny shrimp, delicate small fish, slow long-finned fish and other territorial gouramis in cramped tanks.
Offer a varied omnivore diet. Use quality flakes or small pellets as the staple, then rotate frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia and some vegetable-based foods. Feed small portions and remove leftovers.
