Discus are social Amazonian cichlids with specialised aquarium needs. OATA advises at least five fish, except an established breeding pair, and about 50 litres per adult—roughly 300 litres for six adults. Overview
The Red Turquoise Discus (Symphysodon spp.) is, for many, the king of the freshwater aquarium — a tall, disc-shaped Amazonian cichlid draped in swirling red and turquoise patterning. Serene, intelligent and genuinely stately, it is the centrepiece of the planted show tank, rewarding the dedicated keeper who can provide the warmth, water quality and companionship it needs.

Appearance & Identification
Reaching around 18cm across, the Red Turquoise shows fiery red-orange flanks overlaid with fine turquoise striping that runs into the fins. Colour and pattern intensify with age, diet and confidence, and a settled, well-kept discus holds itself with an unmistakable calm, upright poise.
Aquarium Setup
Discus need a tall aquarium of at least 250 litres, warm (28–30°C), soft and acidic water (pH 6.0–7.2), and immaculate water quality maintained by strong filtration and frequent water changes. A calm location, gentle flow and subdued planting help these sensitive fish settle and show their best colour.
Important
Discus are an advanced-level fish. They need consistently warm (28–30°C), soft, acidic and spotlessly clean water, kept in a group — they are not a beginner's community fish and will decline in cool or unstable conditions.
Temperament & Tank Mates
Peaceful but shy, discus are shoaling fish that feel secure in a group of five or more, where a natural pecking order forms. Keep them with calm, warm-water companions and avoid boisterous or fin-nipping tankmates that would out-compete them at feeding time or leave them stressed and hiding.

Feeding
An omnivore with a hearty appetite, discus thrive on a varied diet of quality discus pellets/flake, frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp, and specialist beef-heart or colour-enhancing preparations. Feed several small meals a day and remove uneaten food promptly to protect the pristine water discus demand.
