Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
Pigeon Blood carries one of the most recognisable names in discus keeping, and the red-toned colouration the label promises has kept this Symphysodon line in demand for decades. It cruises the middle of the water column, where the round, plate-like discus silhouette and warm colour do their best work in a softwater display.
Be honest with yourself before committing: this strain is rated Expert on our care scale, and that rating is earned. Reaching its full adult size of around 18 cm and a potential lifespan of ten years depends on warm, soft, stable water and a keeper who treats maintenance as routine rather than rescue. A minimum of 250 litres gives the fish the volume and stability it needs, with the FAQ on this page covering acclimatisation, breeding and day-to-day questions in more depth.
Temperament is the easy part. Pigeon Blood discus are genuinely peaceful, and the record's recommended companions reflect that: other calm discus, cardinal tetras, rummy-nose tetras, Corydoras catfish, Otocinclus and peaceful dwarf cichlids all work. What doesn't work is just as clear — aggressive cichlids, fin-nipping barbs, large predatory fish, very boisterous swimmers, coldwater species and hard-water livebearers should all stay off the stocking plan.
Feeding offers welcome flexibility for a fish this demanding elsewhere: as a carnivore/omnivore, the Pigeon Blood takes meaty staples and varied fare alike, so building a balanced rotation is straightforward. New owners tend to ask the same things — how big it grows, what it eats, how to acclimatise it, whether it suits a community — and we cover each of those in the FAQ further down this page, so read through before placing an order.
Have the aquarium mature and running at 26–30 °C with soft, slightly acidic water before the fish ever leaves our care. Pair it only with the gentle companions listed above and the Pigeon Blood becomes the obvious centrepiece of a dedicated softwater community. As with all our livestock, it travels to you with a licensed live-animal courier and is covered by our live arrival guarantee.
