Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
The Endler’s Livebearer El Tigre, Poecilia endler, is a small, brilliantly patterned livebearer prized for its constant activity, easy care and striking colouration. This El Tigre form is especially eye-catching, with bold orange, black and metallic markings that stand out beautifully in planted aquariums. At just 2–3 cm on arrival, these fish are ideal for aquarists looking to add lively movement and a splash of colour to a compact or larger community setup.
Endlers are closely related to guppies, but they are generally smaller, more streamlined and often even more energetic. They are a great choice for beginners who want a hardy tropical fish with plenty of character, while experienced keepers enjoy them for breeding projects and display colonies. With the right care, they are active, social and long-lived for such a small fish.
At Tropical Fish Co, we select healthy stock and pack carefully for a smooth transition into your aquarium. Every order is backed by our live arrival guarantee, and we offer fast UK delivery to help your fish arrive in the best possible condition.

Endler’s livebearers originate from northern Venezuela, where they were first discovered in and around shallow, warm, vegetated waters. In the wild, they inhabit calm lagoons, marshy areas and slow-moving streams with plenty of plant cover, leaf litter and natural shelter. These environments are typically warm, mineral-rich and full of micro-life, which helps explain why Endlers are so adaptable in the aquarium.
The El Tigre strain is a selectively bred colour variety inspired by the species’ natural brilliance. Like their wild relatives, they thrive in stable, well-maintained water and appreciate a tank with dense planting, open swimming space and gentle filtration. Their natural behaviour is to forage constantly, explore the midwater and interact in loose groups.
Although small, Endlers are active fish and do best in a tank that gives them room to swim and plenty of visual interest. A 40-litre aquarium is the minimum for a small group, but larger tanks are always better, especially if you want a mixed-sex colony or a planted display. A secure lid is recommended, as these fish can be surprisingly quick and may jump when startled.
Use a soft to moderate flow filter that provides excellent biological filtration without creating excessive current. Endlers enjoy planted aquariums with fine-leaved plants, floating cover and areas of open water. Mosses, hornwort, guppy grass, water sprite and floating plants are all excellent choices. Dark substrate and natural décor can help their colours stand out, while also making them feel secure.
Water quality should be kept stable. Aim for a temperature between 22 and 28°C, with a pH of 6.8 to 8.0. They prefer clean, well-oxygenated water and regular partial water changes. Because they are livebearers, they are sensitive to poor water quality and sudden parameter swings, so consistency is more important than chasing exact numbers.
They are best kept in groups, ideally with more females than males if breeding is not your goal. A ratio of one male to two or three females can help reduce persistent chasing. If you want a colony, be prepared for fry, as Endlers breed readily in suitable conditions.
Endler’s Livebearers are omnivores with a strong preference for small, varied foods. In the aquarium they should be offered a high-quality micro pellet or flake as a staple, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as daphnia, baby brine shrimp, cyclops and finely chopped bloodworm. Vegetable matter is also beneficial, so include spirulina-based foods or other plant-rich options in the diet.
Feed small amounts once or twice daily, only as much as they can consume in a minute or two. Because they are active and small, overfeeding can quickly affect water quality. A varied diet supports colour, vitality and breeding success, while also helping juveniles grow well.
Endlers are peaceful and do best with other calm species that will not outcompete or harass them. Good tank mates include small rasboras, ember tetras, celestial pearl danios, pygmy corydoras, otocinclus and other peaceful dwarf fish. They also work well in species-only setups or with other gentle livebearers in suitably sized aquariums.
Avoid large, boisterous or predatory fish that may see them as food, as well as fin-nippers and aggressive species. Very fast feeders can also be a problem, as Endlers are small and may struggle to compete. If keeping them with shrimp, note that adults usually coexist well with larger shrimp species, but tiny shrimplets may be eaten.
As with many livebearers, males can be persistent when courting, so providing plenty of planting and cover helps reduce stress. A well-structured tank with multiple sight lines and hiding places is ideal.
