Poecilia endleri
A striking golden male Endler guppy with constant activity, vivid colour and easy care for planted community aquariums.
Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
The Golden Male Endler Guppy, Poecilia endleri, is a small, brilliantly coloured livebearer prized for its constant movement, hardiness and easy-going nature. This golden strain is especially eye-catching, with metallic yellow to orange tones that shimmer under aquarium lighting. At around 2.5 cm, these males are perfect for aquarists looking to add colour and energy to a peaceful tropical setup without needing a large tank.
Endlers are closely related to guppies and share many of the same appealing traits: they are active, adaptable and well suited to planted aquariums. Males are smaller and more colourful than females, and this golden variant is a favourite for display tanks where their bright colour really stands out. They are a great choice for beginners, yet still rewarding for experienced fishkeepers who enjoy breeding livebearers or creating natural-style aquascapes.
All fish from Tropical Fish Co are carefully packed for transit, backed by our live arrival guarantee, and sent with fast UK delivery for a smooth and reliable shopping experience.

Endler livebearers originate from northern Venezuela, where they inhabit warm, shallow waters such as lagoons, slow-moving streams and marshy areas. In the wild, they are often found in calm, plant-rich environments with plenty of cover from aquatic vegetation, roots and leaf litter. These habitats are typically warm, slightly mineralised and full of micro-organisms, algae and tiny invertebrates that form part of their natural diet.
The species is known for its adaptability, which is one reason it has become so popular in home aquariums. While the golden colouration seen in aquarium strains is selectively bred, the fish’s underlying needs remain the same: stable warm water, gentle filtration and a well-planted environment that offers security and grazing opportunities.
For best results, keep Golden Male Endlers in a mature, cycled aquarium with plenty of live plants such as hornwort, guppy grass, Java moss and floating plants. Dense planting helps reduce stress, provides natural grazing surfaces and gives shy fish places to retreat. A dark substrate can also help the golden colouration stand out beautifully.
Gentle filtration is ideal, as Endlers do not appreciate strong current. Sponge filters or adjustable internal filters work well, especially in smaller tanks. Regular water changes are important because these fish are active and produce waste, and stable water quality is key to long-term health.
Although males can be kept in a species-only group, they also do well in peaceful community aquariums. A ratio of all males is often preferred if you want to avoid breeding, while mixed livebearer tanks can be used if you are interested in reproduction. As with all livebearers, avoid overcrowding and provide enough swimming space alongside planting and cover.
Recommended water parameters are a temperature of 22–28°C, pH 6.5–8.0 and moderately hard water. They are tolerant fish, but consistency matters more than chasing exact numbers. Sudden changes in temperature or chemistry should be avoided.
Golden Male Endlers are omnivores with a strong appetite. In the aquarium they should be offered a varied diet made up of quality flake, micro pellets, frozen foods and occasional live foods. They will readily accept daphnia, baby brine shrimp, cyclops and finely chopped bloodworm, although live and frozen foods should be fed as part of a balanced routine rather than as the sole diet.
They also benefit from some plant-based matter in the diet. Spirulina-based foods, algae wafers broken into small pieces and vegetable-rich flakes can help support colour and digestion. Feed small amounts once or twice daily, only what they can consume within a couple of minutes. Overfeeding can quickly affect water quality in smaller aquariums.
Because Endlers are active grazers, they will spend much of the day picking at surfaces and searching for food. A varied feeding regime helps maintain their colour, condition and breeding vitality.
Golden Male Endlers are peaceful and best kept with other small, non-aggressive species. Good tank mates include small tetras, rasboras, peaceful dwarf corydoras, otocinclus, shrimp and snails, provided the aquarium is suitably sized and well maintained. They also mix well with other peaceful livebearers in larger setups.
It is best to avoid fin-nipping species, large predatory fish and anything likely to intimidate or outcompete them at feeding time. Aggressive cichlids, barbs known for nipping, large gouramis and most larger community fish are not suitable. Very tiny shrimp fry may be eaten, so breeding shrimp should be kept with caution if you want to protect young.
Male Endlers are generally less likely to harass tank mates than mixed-sex livebearer groups, making them a good option for peaceful community aquariums. Keeping them in a small group helps display natural behaviour and reduces stress.
