Guppies are social livebearers suited to a prepared beginner, not a fish-per-litre formula. Use a mature filtered aquarium, tested neutral-to-alkaline mineral-bearing water, deliberate sex and population planning, open swimming room, cover and a separation option.
Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
Male blue Endlers pack an astonishing amount of colour into a tiny frame. Close relatives of the guppy, these dazzling little livebearers blaze with metallic blue, green and orange, and remain endlessly active in the upper water. Hardy, peaceful and perfectly suited to nano and planted community tanks, an all-male group delivers a shimmering, ever-moving display without the population explosions that come with mixed groups.
Males are small — typically 2.5–3 cm — and vividly marked, with a brilliant metallic blue-green body broken by black bars and warm orange blotches, and a small sword or spade-shaped tail. Each fish is subtly different, and the whole group flickers with iridescence as the light catches their flanks. This selectively coloured “blue” strain emphasises the electric blue-green sheen.
A planted aquarium of 40 litres or more with gentle filtration suits them well. Like guppies, Endlers prefer harder, alkaline water, so a pH of 6.8–8.5 with moderate to high hardness is ideal at 22–28°C. Fine-leaved and floating plants give grazing surfaces and cover, and although these fish are small, a lid is sensible. Their modest size makes them a natural centrepiece for nano and aquascaped tanks.
Peaceful, sociable and always on the move, blue Endlers shoal loosely and explore every level of the tank. They are excellent companions for other small, gentle fish, shrimp and snails. Kept as an all-male group they display and spar harmlessly without the constant courtship of mixed groups — and, importantly, they will interbreed with guppies, so keep them apart if you want to preserve the pure Endler strain.
| Great tank mates | Best avoided |
|---|---|
| Small peaceful rasboras and tetras | Fin-nippers such as tiger barbs |
| Pygmy Corydoras | Large or predatory fish |
| Freshwater shrimp and snails | Aggressive cichlids |
| Other small, gentle livebearers (with hybrid caveat) | Fancy guppies (if keeping the strain pure) |
An easy-going omnivore, the blue Endler thrives on finely crushed flake and micro-pellets with regular frozen treats such as daphnia and baby brine shrimp, plus a little algae or vegetable matter. Their small mouths need appropriately small foods, offered in modest amounts once or twice a day. A varied diet keeps their metallic colours at full intensity.
Endlers are prolific livebearers that reproduce with little encouragement when both sexes are present, delivering broods of fully-formed fry every few weeks. Keeping a single-sex group of males avoids runaway numbers while retaining the colour. If you do breed them, dense planting protects the fry, and strict separation from guppies keeps the line pure.
Keep an all-male group for maximum colour without overpopulation, and house Endlers well away from guppies — the two hybridise readily, and a mixed tank quickly loses the true Endler look.
Every blue male Endler is hand-selected and quarantined before sale, then packed in oxygenated bags with insulation and heat packs when needed and sent by tracked, live-animal courier. Your order is covered by our Live Arrival Guarantee, so it reaches you safely anywhere in the UK.
