Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the species as originally described by Ad Konings in 1994 under Pseudotropheus demasoni, with Pombo Rocks in Lake Malawi, Tanzania, as the type locality. A 2016 taxonomic revision by Li, Konings and Stauffer established the genus Chindongo for a group of small rock-dwelling mbuna and explicitly transferred this species.
The older combination is therefore useful as a synonym, not as a second species. A listing labelled Demasoni, Chindongo demasoni or former Pseudotropheus demasoni may refer to the same fish.

Eschmeyer's Catalog gives Pombo Rocks in Lake Malawi, Tanzania, as the type locality, and FishBase records the species from the Tanzanian part of the lake. It is a rock-dwelling mbuna rather than a river fish, a Tanganyikan cichlid or a general “African cichlid” with interchangeable care.
The rocky origin helps explain the aquarium priorities: hard alkaline water, extensive rock surfaces, narrow routes, crevices and broken lines of sight.
