Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
Coral Red Saulosi Mbuna is a bright, active Lake Malawi cichlid for aquarists who want real mbuna behaviour in a manageable adult size. The accepted scientific name is Chindongo saulosi; you may also see the older trade name Pseudotropheus saulosi, so we keep both names clear without forcing them through the page.
This Coral Red form suits a dedicated Malawi aquarium with hard, alkaline water, strong filtration and a rock-heavy layout. It is not a peaceful community fish for tetras, guppies or shrimp. It is a territorial rock-dwelling cichlid, best chosen for a planned mbuna setup where tank mates share similar water needs and can cope with the same energy level.
The appeal is the mix of colour, movement and compact size. Adults reach about 8-9 cm, so they bring the bold posture of African cichlids without becoming one of the very large Malawi species. Expect colour and pattern to vary with sex, age, mood, lighting and the exact fish supplied, especially across different size variants.
In the wild, Chindongo saulosi is associated with Lake Malawi rocky habitat. That matters in the aquarium: rock piles, caves and broken sight lines help individuals claim space and reduce constant chasing. A bare open tank makes mbuna tension worse; a well-built rockscape gives the fish a more natural way to move, retreat and display.
Use a mature aquarium of at least 150 litres, with 200 litres or more being easier for a group. Build stable rockwork on the tank base before adding substrate, leave open swimming lanes at the front, and keep the water well oxygenated. These fish do best when the aquarium is consistent rather than over-adjusted.
A Malawi-style setup usually works better with hard tap water than with soft-water fishkeeping methods. Avoid mixing this cichlid with species that need acidic, soft or very quiet conditions. Good filtration and regular maintenance are more useful than chasing tiny daily parameter changes.
Saulosi mbuna graze from rock surfaces in nature, so keep the diet vegetable-leaning. Use quality spirulina flake, algae-based cichlid foods and suitable mbuna pellets, with occasional blanched vegetable foods if your group accepts them. Avoid making rich meaty foods the routine diet, as mbuna are prone to digestive problems when fed like general carnivorous community fish.
This is a territorial mbuna, not a gentle community species. It can work well with carefully selected Lake Malawi mbuna of similar size and confidence, especially where the layout breaks lines of sight. Avoid tiny fish, ornamental shrimp, slow peaceful species and mismatched soft-water community fish.
For groups, plan stocking before buying. A single pair in a small tank can create pressure on the weaker fish. A larger aquarium with a thoughtful ratio, extra hiding places and compatible mbuna gives a much better chance of stable behaviour.
We pack live fish carefully for transport and use a licensed live-animal courier. If you are building a Lake Malawi aquarium, compare this fish with Pseudotropheus Membe Deep, Cynotilapia Fletti Red Top and Melanochromis Johani Metangula. Use similar-size Malawi cichlids rather than soft-water community fish, and plan the rockwork before choosing a delivery day.
