Chindongo saulosi ‘Coral Red’ – Coral Red Dwarf Mbuna Cichlid | Lake Malawi

Coral Red Saulosi Mbuna (Chindongo saulosi) is a selectively coloured form of the small rock-dwelling mbuna from Lake Malawi. It is an active, territorial African cichlid best kept in a dedicated hard-water Malawi aquarium rather than a general peaceful community tank.

Colour and identification

Chindongo saulosi is well known for strong sexual colour differences as it matures: males typically develop blue colour with dark vertical bars, while females and juveniles are usually yellow to orange. “Coral Red” is the trade description used for this stock line, so shade and pattern can vary naturally between individual fish and with age, sex, hierarchy, lighting and condition.

Do not use colour alone to guarantee the sex of a small juvenile. The fish should be selected from the current size variant, with adult stocking planned before purchase.

Aquarium setup

Use a mature, well-filtered aquarium designed around mbuna behaviour. Our current house screen is around 200 litres or larger with roughly 100 cm or more of useful swimming length for a managed group, but the final requirement depends on the number of fish, sex ratio, rockwork and other cichlids present. A longer footprint is more useful than a tall narrow aquarium.

Create several stable rock piles, caves and broken sight lines, while leaving open water for feeding and movement. Build heavy rockwork securely from the aquarium base so digging fish cannot undermine it. Sand or fine gravel works well.

Water parameters

Saulosi are Lake Malawi fish and should be kept in stable, mineral-rich alkaline water. A practical aquarium range is 24–28°C, pH about 7.5–8.5, with moderate to hard water. Test the source water rather than adjusting chemistry blindly, and keep ammonia and nitrite at zero in a fully cycled aquarium.

Strong biological filtration and good oxygenation are important because mbuna tanks are often stocked more heavily than peaceful community aquariums. Regular partial water changes help keep nitrate and dissolved waste under control.

Feeding

In nature, mbuna spend much of the day grazing aufwuchs from rock surfaces. In the aquarium, use a high-quality African-cichlid or herbivore-leaning pellet/flakes as the staple, with spirulina or other plant/algal ingredients and suitable vegetable-based foods for variety.

Do not make rich animal-protein foods the main diet. Small amounts of suitable invertebrate-based foods can be used as part of a varied feeding plan, but repeated heavy feeding of fatty or very rich foods is unnecessary and can contribute to digestive and water-quality problems.

Behaviour and group planning

This is not a schooling fish. It is a territorial mbuna whose social behaviour depends on space, sex ratio, rock structure and the personalities of the other cichlids. Mature males can defend territories vigorously, so a single pair is not automatically the safest arrangement.

Where several Saulosi are kept, many aquarists use one male with several females to spread male attention, but that requires reliable sexing and enough room. Juvenile fish cannot always be sexed confidently. Have a separation plan if one fish is being continuously chased, excluded from food or trapped in a corner.

Tank mates

Choose robust Lake Malawi cichlids with compatible hard-water requirements and similar adult size. Avoid small peaceful community fish, slow long-finned species and soft-water fish. Mixing mbuna with peacocks or haps can sometimes work in large carefully planned aquariums, but diet and aggression differences make random combinations risky.

Before ordering

Choose Coral Red Saulosi if you are building a mature Lake Malawi aquarium with hard alkaline water, strong filtration, substantial rockwork and a deliberate stocking plan. Reconsider if the aquarium is newly cycled, very small, soft/acidic, or intended as a calm mixed community.
