Care and setup

Keep Brown Kuhli Loaches in a settled aquarium with fine sand, smooth wood, leaf litter and plenty of cover. They are social fish, so a group of five or more is far better than a single specimen. They spend much of the day hidden and become more active in the evening, especially when the tank is calm.

Use gentle but reliable filtration and keep ammonia and nitrite at zero. Sharp gravel is a poor choice because these loaches probe and burrow around the substrate with delicate barbels. A tight lid is sensible, as slim loaches can squeeze through small gaps.

Feeding

Offer sinking foods after the lights dim so the loaches are not outcompeted by midwater fish. Small pellets, soft wafers, frozen bloodworm, daphnia and cyclops all work well. They will browse leftover particles, but they should never be expected to live on scraps alone.

Tank mates

Choose peaceful fish that enjoy similar warm freshwater conditions.
