Garra spilota
A lively, algae-grazing spotted garra with unique markings and great personality for well-oxygenated community aquariums.
Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
Garra spilota, commonly known as the Spotted Garra, is a fascinating small cyprinid prized for its active behaviour, attractive patterning, and useful grazing habits. Offered here at around 3-4 cm, these fish are a great choice for aquarists looking for something a little different from the usual community species. They are constantly on the move, exploring rockwork, glass, and décor with their specialised mouthparts as they browse for biofilm and small food particles.
This is a species best kept in a mature, well-filtered aquarium with good oxygenation and plenty of hard surfaces to graze on. While often described as peaceful, Garra species can be lively and assertive with one another, especially in smaller spaces, so thoughtful stocking is important. In the right setup, Garra spilota becomes a rewarding, long-lived addition with plenty of character.

Garra spilota originates from freshwater systems in South Asia, where it inhabits flowing streams and river margins with rocky substrates, submerged wood, and abundant biofilm growth. In nature, garra species are adapted to life in moving water, often clinging to surfaces and picking at algae, detritus, and tiny invertebrates. Their body shape and mouth structure are well suited to this lifestyle, making them excellent grazers in the aquarium.
Because of this natural history, they do best in aquariums that mimic a riverine environment: clean water, steady current, oxygen-rich conditions, and plenty of smooth rocks and driftwood. A tank with a natural aquascape not only looks great, but also gives these fish the surfaces and shelter they instinctively seek.
For best results, keep Garra spilota in a mature aquarium of at least 100 litres, with more space recommended if you plan to keep a group. They are active swimmers and appreciate open areas combined with hiding places. Use a fine sand or smooth gravel substrate to protect their barbels and mouths, and add rounded stones, slate, and driftwood to create grazing surfaces.
Filtration should be strong and efficient, with a noticeable current and high oxygen levels. These fish are not ideal for stagnant or under-filtered tanks. Regular water changes are important to maintain excellent water quality, as garra can be sensitive to poor conditions despite their hardy reputation. Aim for stable parameters rather than chasing extremes.
Recommended water values: temperature 20-26°C, pH 6.5-7.8, with clean, well-oxygenated water and low ammonia and nitrite at all times. A planted tank can work well, but choose hardy species and secure them around rocks and wood, as garra may graze on softer growth. Floating plants can help diffuse light and reduce stress, while still leaving plenty of open swimming space.
When introducing new fish, acclimate them carefully and keep the lights subdued for the first day or two. Like many active bottom-dwellers, they appreciate a settled environment and may become shy if repeatedly disturbed.
In the wild, spotted garra spend much of their day browsing surfaces for algae, biofilm, and small organic matter. In the aquarium, they should be offered a varied omnivorous diet rather than relying on algae alone. High-quality sinking pellets or wafers should form the staple, supplemented with algae wafers, blanched vegetables such as courgette and spinach, and occasional frozen or live foods like daphnia, bloodworm, and brine shrimp.
Because they are constant grazers, it is best to feed small amounts once or twice daily. They will also benefit from naturally occurring biofilm in a mature tank, so avoid keeping them in a sterile setup. A balanced diet helps maintain colour, activity, and long-term health. If kept with faster-feeding tank mates, make sure food reaches the bottom so the garra can feed comfortably.
Garra spilota is generally peaceful and works well in community aquariums with similarly sized, non-aggressive fish. Good companions include danios, rasboras, peaceful barbs, rainbowfish, smaller loaches, and robust livebearers, provided the water parameters overlap. They can also be kept with many catfish species that enjoy similar flow and oxygen levels.
It is best to avoid very slow, long-finned, or highly territorial species. Fin-nippers, aggressive cichlids, and delicate fish that dislike current are poor choices. Although not usually aggressive, garra can become pushy with their own kind if space is limited, so keeping a small group in a suitably sized tank is preferable to housing a lone specimen in cramped conditions. Provide several feeding points and plenty of visual breaks to reduce competition.
