Dascyllus melanurus
Bold, hardy marine damselfish with striking black tail markings. Ideal for established saltwater tanks and confident reef keepers.
Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
The Blacktail humbug damselfish (Dascyllus melanurus) is a striking, hardy marine fish known for its bold black-and-white pattern and lively personality. As juveniles they are especially eye-catching, with a compact body, dark tail, and contrasting bands that make them a standout addition to a saltwater aquarium. This medium-sized specimen is supplied as an M size fish, making it a great choice for aquarists looking for an active, resilient marine species with plenty of character.
Blacktail humbugs are often recommended for experienced beginners and intermediate marine keepers because they are robust, adaptable, and generally easy to feed. However, they do have a territorial streak, particularly as they mature, so they are best kept with suitable tank mates and plenty of rockwork. In the right setup they can be a rewarding fish to keep, displaying engaging behaviour and strong feeding responses.
At Tropical Fish Co, we carefully pack and dispatch livestock with fast UK delivery, and every live fish order is covered by our live arrival guarantee for peace of mind.

Dascyllus melanurus is native to the Indo-Pacific region, where it inhabits coral-rich lagoons, reef slopes, and sheltered coastal areas. In the wild, blacktail humbugs are typically found living close to branching corals and rocky reef structures, often in small groups when young. Their natural environment provides constant shelter, strong water movement, and a wide variety of small food items drifting through the water column.
This reef-associated lifestyle explains much of their behaviour in the aquarium. They are confident, quick to claim territory, and happiest when given plenty of live rock, caves, and visual barriers. Their natural resilience also makes them more forgiving of minor fluctuations than many other marine species, although stable water quality is still essential for long-term health.
A mature marine aquarium with stable salinity and excellent filtration is the best home for a Blacktail humbug. While they are not especially demanding, they do appreciate a well-structured aquascape with plenty of hiding places and open swimming space. Live rock is highly beneficial, as it provides shelter, grazing surfaces, and natural territory boundaries that can help reduce aggression.
For a single specimen, we recommend a tank of at least 150 litres, though larger systems are preferable if keeping with other semi-aggressive marine fish. Strong biological filtration, regular water changes, and consistent maintenance are important. Like all saltwater fish, they are sensitive to poor water quality over time, so ammonia and nitrite must always remain at zero.
Ideal water conditions are:
Provide a secure lid, as damselfish can jump when startled. Rockwork should be arranged firmly on the tank base before adding substrate to prevent collapses. If you are keeping more than one damselfish or mixing with territorial species, introduce them carefully and monitor behaviour closely. Juveniles may coexist more peacefully, but adults can become increasingly assertive.
Blacktail humbugs are omnivorous and usually eager feeders. In captivity they accept a wide range of marine foods, including quality pellets, flakes formulated for marine fish, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and enriched preparations with spirulina or algae content. Offering a varied diet helps support colour, vitality, and immune health.
Feed small portions once or twice daily, ensuring all food is consumed within a few minutes. Because damselfish can be enthusiastic eaters, it is easy to overfeed, so portion control is important. A mix of meaty and vegetable-based foods will best reflect their natural omnivorous diet. Occasional vitamin-soaked foods can also be beneficial, especially in heavily stocked tanks.
Blacktail humbugs are best described as semi-aggressive. They can be kept successfully with robust marine fish that are not easily intimidated, especially in larger aquariums with plenty of rockwork. Suitable companions may include similarly sized clownfish, some wrasses, gobies, blennies, and other sturdy reef-safe species, provided the tank is large enough and territories are well defined.
They are not ideal with very timid fish, slow feeders, or species that resemble them in shape or colour, as these may trigger territorial behaviour. In smaller tanks, they may harass new arrivals or claim the entire aquarium as their own. Careful stocking order, ample space, and well-planned aquascaping all help reduce conflict.
Although they are often considered reef-safe with corals, individual behaviour can vary, and their assertive nature means they may bother very small ornamental shrimp or delicate invertebrates. As with any marine fish, compatibility depends on tank size, layout, and the temperament of the individual fish.
