Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
The Elegant Firefish (Nemateleotris decora) is a striking marine fish prized for its slender body, flowing dorsal fin and calm, watchful behaviour. Also known as the Elegant Dartfish, this species is a superb choice for peaceful reef aquariums where it can hover above the rockwork and dart back to safety when startled. The M size offered here is approximately 9 cm, making it a well-established specimen ready to settle into a suitably mature marine system.
Firefish are among the most popular saltwater fish for good reason: they are attractive, relatively hardy when kept correctly, and generally peaceful with tank mates. Nemateleotris decora is especially admired for its elegant shape and subtle but beautiful colouration. It is best kept in a secure aquarium with plenty of hiding places, low to moderate flow, and calm companions. With the right setup, this species can become a long-lived and rewarding addition to a reef or fish-only marine tank.
At Tropical Fish Co, we carefully select healthy livestock and offer a live arrival guarantee plus fast UK delivery, so your new fish arrives in the best possible condition.

Nemateleotris decora is native to the tropical Indo-Pacific, where it inhabits outer reef slopes, sandy areas near coral reefs, and rubble zones. In the wild, firefish often hover just above the seabed, retreating quickly into burrows or crevices when threatened. This natural behaviour is important to replicate in the aquarium, as it helps the fish feel secure and reduces stress.
The species is adapted to clear, warm, marine waters with stable salinity and excellent oxygenation. It spends much of its time in open water near shelter, feeding on tiny drifting foods in the water column. Understanding this habitat is key to successful care: the Elegant Firefish thrives in a peaceful environment with plenty of rockwork, open swimming space, and a tightly covered tank to prevent jumping.
A mature marine aquarium of at least 100 litres is recommended for a single Elegant Firefish, although larger systems are always better for stability and compatibility. A secure lid is essential, as firefish are well known jumpers, particularly when startled or newly introduced. Fine sand or a mixed reef substrate works well, and live rock should be arranged to create caves, overhangs and bolt-holes where the fish can retreat.
Keep water movement gentle to moderate. Strong, chaotic flow can make this species reluctant to feed and may cause it to remain hidden. Instead, aim for a calm area with some current but plenty of sheltered zones. Stable reef-quality water is important: temperature should be maintained between 24 and 27°C, with pH between 8.1 and 8.4 and salinity kept consistent. As with all marine fish, excellent filtration and regular maintenance are vital.
Because firefish are peaceful and somewhat timid, they do best in aquariums with non-aggressive tank mates. They may be bullied by boisterous species, especially in smaller tanks. If keeping more than one firefish, provide a much larger aquarium with multiple hiding places; even then, compatibility can be unpredictable unless the fish are a bonded pair or a carefully managed group in a spacious system.
The Elegant Firefish is a carnivorous micro-predator that feeds on tiny zooplankton and small invertebrates in the wild. In captivity, offer a varied diet of high-quality marine pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped seafood and other small meaty foods. Variety is important for long-term health, colour and vitality.
Feed small amounts once or twice daily, ensuring food is sized appropriately for the fish’s small mouth. Firefish can be shy feeders, especially after introduction, so it helps to feed in a calm environment with minimal competition. If tank mates are fast or aggressive at feeding time, target feeding may be necessary. A well-fed firefish will display better colour, remain active, and be more confident in the aquarium.
The Elegant Firefish is best suited to peaceful community reef tanks. Good companions include clownfish, gobies, blennies, small wrasses with calm temperaments, chromis, cardinalfish, cleaner shrimp, peppermint shrimp, snails and most reef-safe invertebrates. It also works well with many corals, as it is considered reef safe.
Avoid aggressive or highly territorial fish, especially larger dottybacks, hawkfish, triggerfish, puffers, large wrasses, damsels with a bad attitude, and other species that may harass or outcompete it for food. Fast, boisterous feeders can also stress this fish in smaller aquariums. A peaceful stocking plan is the best way to keep an Elegant Firefish visible, confident and healthy.
When introduced properly, this species can become a charming, long-term resident of the aquarium. Its hovering posture and quick darting movements add life and elegance to the tank without dominating the aquascape.
