Pseudanthias squamipinnis
Beautiful female Sea Goldie anthias for reef tanks. Active, colourful and best kept in a group in a mature marine aquarium.
Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
The Sea Goldie female, Pseudanthias squamipinnis, is one of the most popular anthias in marine aquariums thanks to its constant movement, attractive colouration and lively reef presence. Females are typically orange to pinkish-orange with a streamlined body and elegant fins, making them a brilliant choice for aquarists who want a fish that adds energy and natural schooling behaviour to a saltwater display.
This species is best suited to a mature marine aquarium with stable water conditions, plenty of swimming space and regular feeding. Anthias are active planktivores in the wild, so they do best when offered small meals throughout the day rather than one large feeding. When kept correctly, they are rewarding fish that bring a real sense of life to the reef. We offer fast UK delivery and a live arrival guarantee for added peace of mind.
Sea Goldies are generally reef-safe and can be kept in groups, although social structure matters. In many systems, a single dominant male may be accompanied by several females, but this listing is for female fish only. Females may change sex if the social hierarchy changes, which is a natural part of the species’ biology. Because of their activity level and feeding needs, they are best for aquarists with some marine experience and a well-established tank.

Pseudanthias squamipinnis is native to the Indo-Pacific, where it inhabits coral reef slopes, drop-offs and outer reef areas with strong water movement. In nature, Sea Goldies form large aggregations above the reef, feeding on zooplankton carried by the current. Their natural environment is bright, oxygen-rich and highly stable, which is why they thrive best in aquariums that replicate these conditions.
The species’ social behaviour is one of its most interesting traits. Females often live in harems led by a dominant male, and the group may move together in the water column throughout the day. This schooling instinct is a major reason they are so captivating in the home aquarium. A healthy anthias group will spend much of its time in open water, darting in and out of the flow while remaining alert and active.
Sea Goldies should be housed in a mature marine aquarium with excellent filtration, strong gas exchange and stable salinity. They are not ideal for newly set-up tanks, as they can be sensitive to fluctuating water quality. A larger reef tank with open swimming space, live rock for shelter and moderate to strong flow is ideal. Provide caves and overhangs so the fish can retreat when needed, but avoid overcrowding the tank with rockwork that restricts movement.
Water stability is more important than chasing exact numbers. Keep nitrate and phosphate as low as practical, maintain consistent salinity, and ensure oxygen levels are high. Anthias benefit from strong surface agitation and efficient protein skimming. Because they are active feeders, a tank with robust biological filtration is strongly recommended.
For best results, keep them in a group of females where possible. In larger systems, a harem-style setup can work very well, but compatibility should be planned carefully. Provide a secure lid, as anthias can jump when startled. Lighting should be reef-appropriate, and the tank should have open mid-water areas rather than being packed with dense aquascape.
Recommended parameters:
Sea Goldies are planktivores, meaning they feed on tiny drifting foods in the water column. In captivity, they should be offered a varied marine diet including enriched frozen mysis, copepods, finely chopped seafood, quality marine pellets and frozen plankton-style foods. They usually feed best when food is introduced in small portions several times a day.
Because anthias have fast metabolisms, underfeeding is a common mistake. A single daily feed is often not enough for long-term health. If possible, use an automatic feeder for small pellet feeds and supplement with frozen foods. Vitamin-enriched foods can help maintain colour and condition. A well-fed anthias is more active, more robust and more likely to settle well.
Always remove uneaten food where possible and avoid overloading the tank with excess nutrients. Good feeding practice, combined with strong filtration, helps keep both the fish and the reef environment healthy.
Sea Goldie females are generally peaceful and do best with other calm marine species. Suitable tank mates include peaceful wrasses, gobies, blennies, clownfish, chromis, cardinals and other non-aggressive reef fish. They also mix well with many invertebrates and corals, making them a strong choice for reef aquariums.
Avoid housing them with aggressive, territorial or very boisterous fish that may outcompete them for food or intimidate them. Large predatory species, aggressive damsels, dottybacks and overly dominant tangs may cause stress. Anthias can also be bullied by fast feeders if they are introduced into an established community without careful planning.
When kept in groups, monitor social interactions closely. In smaller systems, one fish may become dominant, so provide adequate space and multiple feeding points. A peaceful, stable community will help Sea Goldies display their natural behaviour and colour.
