Overview

The Indian Sail-fin Surgeonfish (Zebrasoma desjardini) is a stunning marine tang prized for its dramatic body shape, elegant sail-like dorsal fin and bold, maze-like markings. This medium-sized specimen is a superb choice for experienced marine keepers looking to add movement, colour and algae-grazing activity to a large saltwater aquarium. As with all surgeonfish, it is an active swimmer that needs plenty of open space, stable water quality and a mature system with established algae growth and vegetable-based foods.

Also known as the Desjardini sailfin tang or Indian sailfin tang, this species is native to the Indo-Pacific and can grow into a substantial fish in the home aquarium. It is best kept in a spacious reef or fish-only marine setup with strong filtration, high oxygenation and ample rockwork. When properly housed, it is hardy, engaging and a constant presence in the tank. We supply livestock with a live arrival guarantee and fast UK delivery for your peace of mind.

Origin & Natural Habitat

Zebrasoma desjardini is found in the Indo-Pacific, including the Red Sea and surrounding tropical marine waters, where it inhabits coral reefs, lagoon edges and seaward reef slopes. In the wild it spends much of the day grazing on filamentous algae and browsing across reef structures. Its laterally compressed body and long snout are perfectly adapted for picking at algae growing on rock and coral surfaces.

This species is built for constant movement and open-water cruising, often seen weaving between reef outcrops in search of food. Understanding this natural behaviour is key to successful aquarium care: it needs room to swim, plenty of grazing opportunities and a tank layout that allows it to establish a route through the aquascape without feeling trapped.

Tank Setup & Water Parameters

Because the Indian Sail-fin Surgeonfish can reach a large adult size and is an active swimmer, it should only be kept in a mature marine aquarium with generous dimensions. A minimum of 800 litres is recommended, but larger is always better. Long tank runs are especially important, as this species uses its body shape and continuous swimming style to move efficiently through the water column.

Provide strong, turbulent water movement and excellent surface agitation to maintain high oxygen levels. Stable salinity, low nitrate and pristine water quality are essential. Live rock is highly beneficial, not only for biological filtration but also as a natural grazing surface. Leave open swimming space in the centre and front of the tank, while using rockwork to create sheltered lanes and visual barriers.

Ideal water parameters are:

  • Temperature: 24–27°C
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Specific gravity: 1.023–1.026
  • Ammonia and nitrite: 0
  • Nitrate: kept as low as practical, ideally under 20 ppm

As a surgeonfish, this species can be prone to stress if introduced to an immature aquarium. A well-established tank with stable chemistry and regular maintenance is strongly advised. Quarantine is recommended before introduction to the display tank, particularly in mixed marine systems.

Feeding Guide

The Indian Sail-fin Surgeonfish is primarily herbivorous and should be fed accordingly. In the wild it grazes on algae throughout the day, so in captivity it benefits from frequent small meals rather than one large feeding. Offer a varied diet centred on marine algae and vegetable matter, supplemented with quality prepared foods.

Recommended foods include dried seaweed sheets (nori), spirulina-based flakes or pellets, marine herbivore pellets, blanched leafy greens in moderation, and frozen marine foods such as mysis or enriched brine shrimp as occasional supplements. Clip seaweed to the glass or use a feeding station to encourage natural grazing behaviour.

Because tangs are active and fast metabolisers, underfeeding can quickly lead to weight loss and reduced vitality. A healthy specimen should have a rounded body profile and active feeding response. If the fish is new to the aquarium, tempt it with fresh algae sheets and high-quality herbivore pellets until it settles in.

Tank Mates / Compatibility

This species is generally peaceful towards non-competing tank mates but can become territorial with other surgeonfish, tangs or similarly shaped algae grazers, especially in smaller systems. In a large aquarium, it may coexist with other robust marine fish if introduced carefully and with enough space to reduce territorial disputes.

Good tank mates include clownfish, wrasses, anthias, gobies, blennies, dwarf angelfish, larger peaceful reef fish and many invertebrates. It is usually reef-safe with corals, although individual behaviour can vary and any surgeonfish may nip at fleshy corals if underfed or stressed.

Avoid housing with aggressive triggers, puffers, large predatory fish, and other tangs unless the aquarium is very large and the stocking plan has been carefully considered. Similar-bodied surgeonfish should be added with caution, and ideally only one or a carefully planned group should be kept in very spacious systems.
