Nassarius sp.
Small marine sand-sifting scavenger for a cleaner substrate and healthier reef tank.
Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
Nassarius sp. are popular marine snails prized for their ability to keep the substrate clean and aerated. Often called Nassarius snails or sand-sifting snails, these small invertebrates spend much of their time buried in the sand, emerging quickly when they detect food. They are an excellent addition to a saltwater clean-up crew, especially in aquariums with a sandy bed where leftover meaty foods and detritus can collect.
Unlike algae-grazing snails, Nassarius are scavengers. They do not primarily eat film algae or coral growth; instead, they help consume uneaten food, decaying organic matter and other waste before it can break down and affect water quality. Their behaviour is fascinating to watch, as they often appear from the sand in a group when feeding time begins.
This small size variant is ideal for nano and medium marine aquariums, provided the tank has a suitable sand substrate and is mature enough to support a clean-up crew. With stable marine conditions and sensible feeding, Nassarius snails are hardy, useful and easy to care for.
At Tropical Fish Co, we carefully pack live marine livestock for safe transit, backed by our live arrival guarantee and fast UK delivery options where available.

Nassarius snails belong to a widespread group of marine gastropods found in coastal waters around the world, particularly in sandy and muddy seabeds. In nature they live buried just beneath the surface, using their siphon to detect dissolved food particles and carrion. When food is present, they quickly emerge and move towards it, making them efficient natural scavengers.
Their natural habitat is typically shallow marine sand flats, lagoons, estuaries and sheltered coastal areas. These environments are rich in organic material, and Nassarius have evolved to exploit that food source. In the aquarium, this translates into a snail that thrives in a mature marine system with a sand bed and regular feeding of frozen or prepared marine foods.
Because they are adapted to life in sediment, Nassarius snails are especially useful in reef tanks and fish-only systems with sand substrates. They help stir the upper layer of sand, which can reduce dead spots and support a healthier substrate environment.
Nassarius snails are best kept in a stable marine aquarium with live rock, a sandy substrate and good water movement. A fine to medium sand bed is ideal, as they need to burrow and move freely through the substrate. Sharp gravel or very coarse crushed coral is less suitable and can make it difficult for them to behave naturally.
As with all marine invertebrates, stability is more important than chasing exact numbers. Keep salinity consistent, avoid sudden changes in temperature or pH, and ensure the tank is fully cycled before adding them. They are sensitive to copper-based medications and should never be exposed to treatments intended for fish only.
Recommended conditions:
Do not overstock clean-up crew snails. While Nassarius are useful, they still need enough natural waste and supplemental food to remain healthy. In a very sterile tank they may struggle if there is not enough organic material available.
Nassarius snails are scavengers rather than algae grazers, so their diet should reflect that. In the aquarium they feed on leftover meaty foods such as mysis, brine shrimp, fish flesh, clam, squid and sinking marine pellets. They are especially active when food is introduced, often surfacing rapidly from the sand.
In an established tank with fish, they may find enough natural scraps to survive, but supplemental feeding is often beneficial. Offer small amounts of meaty food near the substrate once or twice a week, depending on the size and stocking of the aquarium. Feed sparingly to avoid excess waste and maintain good water quality.
They are not suitable as a sole solution for algae control, and they will not replace proper husbandry. Their role is to help process leftover food and keep the sand bed cleaner.
Nassarius snails are peaceful and generally compatible with most reef-safe fish and invertebrates. They are a good choice for community marine aquariums where the goal is to maintain a tidy substrate without disturbing corals or other livestock.
Good tank mates include clownfish, gobies, blennies, wrasses that are not snail-eaters, reef-safe tangs, hermit crabs, cleaner shrimp and most corals. They also work well alongside other clean-up crew members such as turbo snails, trochus snails and cerith snails, provided the tank is not overstocked.
Avoid housing them with predators that may eat snails, including triggerfish, puffers, some large wrasses, hawkfish and certain crabs. Large hermit crabs may also harass or kill snails for shells. If you keep aggressive or opportunistic species, provide plenty of hiding places and monitor carefully.
Because Nassarius snails spend much of their time in the sand, they are best suited to aquariums with a proper substrate rather than bare-bottom systems.
