Carbon Rili Shrimp are small, peaceful ornamental Neocaridina with a dark carbon colour line and variable Rili-style markings. They are at their best in a mature planted aquarium where they can graze across moss, wood, leaves and stone throughout the day. This is an active dwarf shrimp rather than a guaranteed algae cure: natural biofilm is valuable, but a colony still needs deliberate feeding and stable, mineral-bearing freshwater.
The supplier lists this line as Neocaridina denticulata / black carbon rilli. Contemporary aquarium and taxonomic sources more often place Rili colour forms under Neocaridina davidi, so that is the customer-facing trade identification used here. The exact genetic lineage has not been independently verified. Colour coverage, transparent areas, sex and grade naturally vary between individuals, and the retained gallery image should be treated as representative rather than a promise of one exact pattern.

Rili is a hobby colour-pattern term, not a separate wild species. A classic Rili shrimp has coloured areas interrupted by paler or transparent sections, often with stronger colour around the head and tail. Carbon lines are selected for dark charcoal, black or blue-black coverage. Real animals do not leave a production line: some are strongly divided into dark and clear zones, while others are mostly dark, lightly mottled or more translucent.
That natural variation matters when buying live shrimp online. This listing does not guarantee an exhibition grade, a fixed percentage of clear body, a particular sex or an exact match to the photograph. The larger size choice may make pattern assessment easier, but size does not guarantee stronger colour. USGS and common aquarium usage identify cultivated cherry and Rili forms as N. davidi, while recent research shows that the wider davidi-denticulata-heteropoda complex remains taxonomically debated. A test result of zero ammonia and zero nitrite is the starting point, not the whole definition of maturity. Shrimp constantly pick at microbial films that develop on hardscape, plant leaves, substrate and filter surfaces. A newly cycled aquarium may process waste but still offer very little grazing. Allow plants and biofilm to establish, and add the colony only when temperature and water chemistry have settled into a repeatable routine.
A 20-litre aquarium is our practical minimum for a starter group. More water volume is easier to keep stable and provides more surface area. Small desktop containers can change temperature, dissolved minerals and waste concentration quickly, especially after feeding or evaporation. A secure lid is useful around cables and filter outlets, although these are not habitual escape artists when water quality is sound.
An air-driven sponge filter is simple and gives shrimp another grazing surface. A small internal, hang-on or external filter can also work when the flow is not throwing the animals around and every intake gap is protected with fine sponge or mesh. Check the guard after cleaning: a gap that looks harmless to an adult can admit a newly hatched shrimplet.
Keep good surface movement and oxygenation, particularly during warm weather. Do not confuse a broad temperature tolerance with an ideal at every point in that range. Laboratory work found faster egg development at warmer temperatures but egg loss at 32°C; steady routine care below the high-temperature extreme is the more conservative approach.
Mosses, fine-leaved plants, epiphytes, wood, rounded stone and a modest layer of leaf litter all add usable surface area. Plants are helpful, but any new plant may carry pesticide or treatment residue. Source aquarium-safe plants, rinse and quarantine where appropriate, and never assume that a product safe for fish is automatically safe for invertebrates.
Dark substrate can make carbon tones look stronger, while a lighter foreground can make the shrimp easier to see. Choose an inert or active substrate only after considering how it affects pH and hardness. The goal is a stable system that suits your source water, not a fashionable number reached by repeated chemical correction.

Test the aquarium and the water used for changes. If you use reverse-osmosis water, it must be remineralised consistently before it reaches the tank. If you use tap water, condition it correctly and learn its seasonal pattern. Top up evaporation with water that does not keep adding hardness; evaporation removes water but leaves dissolved minerals behind.
Water changes should be regular enough to control waste, but the replacement water should be close in temperature and mineral content. One large, poorly matched change can be more disruptive than several measured changes. Avoid routine use of pH-up, pH-down or hardness products without a clear plan and reliable testing.
Read every medication, algaecide, fertiliser and pest treatment label before it enters a shrimp aquarium. Trace minerals and properly dosed plant products are not the same thing as an invertebrate-toxic treatment, so blanket slogans about copper are unhelpful. The safe rule is to use only a product whose label and dose are explicitly compatible with shrimp and other invertebrates in your system.
Neocaridina are opportunistic omnivorous grazers. Research records algae, detritus and small animal material in their diet, but a glass box does not continually replace those resources. Mature biofilm should form the base of the grazing environment, supported by a nutritionally complete shrimp food and occasional supplementary foods.

Feed according to colony size, plant cover and the amount of established grazing. A small group in a mature tank may need far less than a large breeding colony. Watch what remains after the animals have fed rather than following a fixed quantity copied from another aquarium. Snails appearing in large numbers, cloudy water or food still sitting untouched are practical warnings that the system is receiving too much.
Carbon Rili Shrimp can help graze soft algae and fine organic material, but they will not solve hair algae, cyanobacteria, dirty filters or excess nutrients. Treat them as animals with their own nutritional needs, not maintenance equipment.
A settled colony spends much of the day walking over surfaces and moving food particles towards the mouth with the front appendages. Hiding immediately after arrival or around a moult can be normal. Persistent inactivity across the whole group, frantic swimming, repeated attempts to leave the water or multiple deaths are not normal and should trigger water and contamination checks.

Dense moss and fine plants improve survival chances but do not turn an unsafe predator into a compatible tank mate. Feed fish properly, provide multiple refuges and accept that a mixed display tank is different from a breeding colony. Neocaridina have direct development: the female carries eggs beneath the abdomen and the young hatch as miniature shrimp rather than a free-swimming larval stage. A mature, stable aquarium with fine cover, protected filtration and constant micro-food gives shrimplets the strongest start. Avoid moving a berried female simply to inspect her; unnecessary handling can do more harm than observation in place.
Newly hatched shrimp need access to biofilm on a scale they can use. Moss, mature sponge filtration, leaf surfaces and established hardscape are valuable. Powdered or very fine foods can supplement this, but a small aquarium is easy to pollute. Use tiny portions and judge the result by water quality and growth, not by how much food disappears.
Different Neocaridina colour lines can interbreed. The first generation may still look attractive, but later offspring can show mixed, less predictable or wild-type colour. Keep Carbon Rili Shrimp in a dedicated line if preserving the dark Rili phenotype matters. Do not mix them with Orange Rili Shrimp, Super Red Sakura Shrimp, Orange Sakura Shrimp, Blue Mary Shrimp or Yellow Neon Shrimp when predictable offspring are the goal.
Selective breeding takes several generations and honest record keeping. This retail listing does not guarantee breeding sex, a fixed male-to-female ratio, berried females or that every offspring will meet a chosen grade.
Shrimp grow by shedding the old exoskeleton. A clean empty moult can look like a dead shrimp at first glance; check for the split behind the head and the hollow, transparent shell. Leave a normal moult in the aquarium unless there is a contamination reason to remove it, because the colony often grazes it and recovers minerals.
Stable mineral content supports the moulting process, but adding calcium products without testing can create another instability. If you see repeated failed moults, first confirm GH, KH, temperature, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate trend and the consistency of water changes. Also review diet, possible contamination and recent treatments.
