Red Lipstick Goby (Sicyopus jonklaasi)

Red Lipstick Goby is supplied under the trade identity Sicyopus jonklaasi. The Catalog of Fishes recognises a Sri Lankan species by that name, but the label does not certify this batch’s collecting locality or origin. Each quantity is one unsexed fish, not a pair or wholesale pack. The supplier approximate grade is 3–4 cm; the current listing has no size selector, and individual length and colour vary.

Care and setup

Build the aquarium around clean, oxygen-rich flow, smooth rockwork, mature surfaces and secure cover. Arrange retreats and quieter feeding spots as well as moving water, so the fish can rest and food is not immediately swept away. Cover filter intakes safely and keep rockwork stable. This is not a generic algae-eater for a new tank; maturity does not remove the need for deliberate feeding.

Ask about current holding conditions and acclimate gradually; avoid abrupt temperature or chemistry changes to chase a number. Monitor ammonia, nitrite, oxygenation and feeding response, and make measured water changes.

Feeding

Offer appropriately small frozen or live invertebrate foods, and try suitable fine sinking foods only where accepted. Feed modest portions into an accessible quieter area and watch that the goby actually eats; a belly that becomes pinched needs attention, not more assumptions about grazing. Remove leftovers and do not rely on algae, glass-cleaning or natural biofilm as a complete ration. The FAO Sri Lankan fish-resource report does not establish a natural diet for the named species, so this is practical feeding advice rather than a claimed wild diet.

Arrival and guarantee

Choose companions for compatible water, current and temperament rather than simply a “peaceful community” label. Avoid large predators and fish that monopolise food or disturb bottom territories. Shrimp and their young are not guaranteed safe.
