Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
Hailing from the arid interior of Australia, the Desert Goby (Chamidogobius eremius) is a small, tough little fish built for conditions that would test most aquarium species. That resilience makes it a fascinating choice for keepers who enjoy a fish with genuine character and a willingness to breed in the home tank.
It reaches around 4.5 cm, sits firmly at the bottom of the aquarium and lives for roughly three years. Despite its rugged origins it is peaceful by nature, and as an omnivore it accepts a varied diet of small prepared and frozen foods. What it really wants is hard, alkaline water kept warm — conditions that suit its natural range.
A 60-litre tank with a sandy base, rocks and caves gives males the territories they like to defend during courtship. Stable, mineral-rich water is the key to keeping it comfortable, with hardness running from 5 right up to 25 dGH and a temperature anywhere between 18 and 26°C.
Aquarists often ask whether the Desert Goby is easy to breed, and it has a strong reputation for spawning in the home tank once the water suits it and the males have caves to claim. That makes it a particularly satisfying project fish for someone who wants more than a passive occupant, even if its three-year lifespan is shorter than many community species.
It does best with its own kind, or with carefully chosen, similarly sized peaceful fish that tolerate the same warm, hard, alkaline conditions; other non-aggressive Australian natives of similar size can work if the tank is large enough and territories are managed. Avoid large or aggressive fish, fast boisterous species, fin-nippers and predatory invertebrates. Although it is peaceful, the priority when choosing companions is matching its preference for warm, hard, alkaline water, since few standard community fish share that taste.
