Vinciguerra's Stone Loach (Schistura vinciguerrae) is an active stream loach from the Irrawaddy and Salween drainage region of Myanmar and neighbouring China. What kind of aquarium does it need?

Build the aquarium like a clean stream rather than a still community tank. Use fine sand or smooth gravel with rounded stones, several crevices and shaded resting points. Heavy rocks must be secure and should not trap waste underneath them. Leave open feeding lanes so every fish can reach food.

Use mature biological filtration, useful current and visible surface movement. The fish should be able to choose between faster and calmer areas rather than being pinned in one continuous jet. Keep ammonia and nitrite at zero and remove trapped organic waste during routine maintenance.

What should I feed it?

Offer a quality sinking micro pellet or small bottom-feeder granule as the prepared staple. Rotate suitably sized frozen or live foods such as daphnia, cyclops, Artemia and clean insect larvae. Natural biofilm may be grazed, but it is not a complete diet.

Feed modest portions that are consumed promptly. In a mixed aquarium, make sure faster fish do not take every item before it reaches the bottom. Food left among rocks quickly becomes a water-quality problem.

Can it live with other fish?

Choose active, non-aggressive species that appreciate similar clean, oxygen-rich water and do not crowd the bottom. Small stream-adapted danios or rasboras can be easier companions than slow long-finned fish.
