Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
Peacock Snakehead (Channa pulchra), also known as the Red Spotted Snakehead, is a colourful Channa species for keepers who can provide a covered, cooler specialist aquarium. It is intelligent, predatory and territorial, so the best results come from a species-style setup rather than a busy community tank.
| Scientific name | Channa pulchra |
|---|---|
| Adult size | 25-30 cm |
| Minimum aquarium | 250 litres or larger |
| Temperature | 20-24 C |
| pH | 6.0-7.5 |
| Temperament | Predatory and territorial; best planned as a species or specialist setup |
| Diet | Carnivore; prawns, mussel, earthworms, insects and quality carnivore pellets |
Use a secure lid with no gaps, shaded areas, wood, plants and open surface access. Peacock Snakeheads breathe atmospheric air and can jump, so containment is not optional. They also prefer cooler, steady water than many warm tropical community fish.
Plan tank mates cautiously. A single fish or settled pair is usually safer than mixing Channa pulchra with small community fish, fin nippers or nervous species.
Feed a carnivore diet of prawns, mussel, earthworms, insects and quality carnivore pellets. Varied prepared foods are cleaner and safer than live feeder fish.
Livestock orders are packed carefully and sent by licensed live-animal courier. The Live Arrival Guarantee applies when the receiving and acclimation instructions are followed.
