Before choosing a light, measure the tank and check the mounting width, power supply and any controller it needs. A replacement tube or bulb must fit the existing fixture as well as suit its intended use.

Lighting does two jobs: it shows off your fish and, in a planted tank, it powers plant growth. The right unit depends on whether you keep plants, how deep the tank is, and whether you want simple illumination or programmable control.

Match the light to the tank. A fish-only tank needs enough light to view the fish; a planted tank needs the correct spectrum and intensity for the plants you're growing. Check each product for tank size, spectrum and mounting details before ordering.

Choose light intensity for the plant species, tank depth and whether CO2 is supplied. Many Anubias and Java Fern varieties suit modest light; demanding carpets and stem plants may need more. More light alone will not solve a lack of nutrients or CO2.
Use a timer to give the aquarium a consistent light and dark period. The duration should suit the plants and animals and the strength of the light. Watch plant growth and algae, and adjust gradually rather than leaving the light on all day and night.
Many freshwater fish-only tanks need relatively modest illumination, with shaded areas for fish that prefer them. Check the species’ needs and keep a consistent day and night cycle. A bright plant-growing light is not necessary simply to view fish.
A quality LED unit with a full spectrum suited to plant growth, sized to your tank's length and depth, is the standard modern choice — efficient, long-lasting and often programmable. T5 fluorescent fixtures still perform well too. For deeper tanks or demanding plants, look for higher output; for a low-tech tank, a modest planted-spec LED is plenty.
Excessive intensity or a long lighting period can contribute to algae, alongside nutrient supply and other tank conditions. Check the light schedule, feeding and plant growth together; reducing light alone may not address the cause.
Size, output, mounting and control features affect the cost. Compare the complete setup, including a power supply or controller where required. Check the listed parts before comparing prices.
