The classic ram: a jewel-like dwarf cichlid for warm, soft water
The ram (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi) is a small South American dwarf cichlid from the Orinoco basin of Venezuela and Colombia. This listing is the classic colour form, often sold as the German blue ram: a golden-yellow front, iridescent blue spangling, a black bar through the red eye and a dark spot on the flank. Males have taller, longer dorsal fins; females are smaller with a pink belly.

What you receive
One quantity is one live ram of about 3–4 cm, unsexed. Buy several if you hope to form a pair.
Aquarium and water
A mature, planted aquarium of about 54 litres or more for a pair, with soft sand, roots, flat stones and gentle flow. Rams need warm, soft, slightly acidic water — 27–30°C, pH 5.0–7.0 and 1–10 dGH (Seriously Fish) — and very clean water, so add them only to a fully cycled aquarium and change water regularly.
Feeding
Feed small sinking pellets and micro-granules with frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp and Daphnia, in small portions once or twice a day; rams feed near the bottom and can be outcompeted by fast fish.
Tank mates and behaviour
Peaceful with small, calm fish that like warm, soft water, such as small tetras, pencilfish and Corydoras that tolerate the temperature. Avoid large or boisterous cichlids and fast fish that take all the food.
Follow the arrival sequence before releasing the fish
Tropical Fish Co’s delivery and Live Arrival Guarantee policy explains the packing and arrival procedure. Livestock is hand-bagged in pure oxygen and placed in an insulated poly box, with a heat pack when the weather calls for it. Someone must be at the address to receive the parcel because live animals cannot be left unattended.
- Receive the parcel in person and start filming before opening it. Show the parcel still sealed with the outer box visible.
- Open the parcel in one continuous take. Keep filming until the fish can be seen inside the sealed bag before anything is disturbed.
- Float the bag for 20–30 minutes so the temperature equalises slowly.
- Do not pour the bag water into the aquarium. Release the fish without adding transport water to the established system.
