Suckerhead Garra (Garra gotyla)

Suckerhead Garra (Garra gotyla) is an active Asian river fish with a specialised underside mouth used for gripping and grazing over stones. It is a different species from the smaller Doctor Fish, Garra rufa, and should not inherit Doctor Fish care, spa wording or adult-size expectations.

River-style aquarium

This species is best suited to a mature, oxygen-rich aquarium with useful current. Use rounded stones, smooth gravel or sand, wood and open grazing surfaces. Strong filtration and surface movement are important, especially when the aquarium runs toward the warmer end of the range.

Do not confuse “current” with a narrow jet that blasts the fish continuously. Create a flow pattern across the aquarium while retaining calmer resting areas behind wood and rockwork.

Feeding and algae grazing

Garra gotyla naturally takes algae, plant material and detritus, but that does not make it a maintenance shortcut. Offer quality algae or spirulina-based foods, sinking omnivore pellets and vegetables such as courgette or green bean. Small suitable frozen foods can be used for variety.

Allow some mature biofilm to remain on stone and wood rather than sterilising every surface at once. At the same time, do not underfeed in an attempt to force more algae consumption.

Behaviour and group planning

Suckerhead Garra are active fish and need more swimming length than their bottom-grazing appearance suggests. They can be kept with their own kind in a sufficiently large aquarium, but space, feeding points and visual breaks are important as fish mature.

If one fish is constantly chasing another away from food or resting areas, review the group size, aquarium length and layout rather than assuming the behaviour will simply stop.

Tank mates

Choose active peaceful-to-robust fish that tolerate cooler, oxygen-rich conditions. Appropriate danios, barbs, larger rasboras and other river-oriented species can work when adult sizes and water needs overlap.

Avoid very slow long-finned fish, tiny tank mates that may be stressed by constant activity, and aggressive species that monopolise the bottom. Warm-water specialists such as Discus or Rams are also a poor environmental match.

Before ordering

Choose Suckerhead Garra if you have a mature, well-oxygenated river-style aquarium and enough room for an adult that may approach 20 cm. Reconsider if the tank is small, newly cycled, low-flow or maintained permanently at high tropical temperatures.
