Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
Uaru Cichlid (Uaru amphiacanthoides) is a large South American cichlid known for its disc-like shape, social behaviour and plant-heavy feeding. It is peaceful compared with many large cichlids, but it is still a big, sensitive fish that needs warm, clean, soft water and a spacious aquarium.
| Adult size | Up to about 25 cm standard length |
|---|---|
| Minimum aquarium | 400 litres or more for a small group |
| Water | 26-30°C, pH 5.5-7.0, soft to moderately hard water |
| Diet | Plant-heavy omnivore; spirulina, vegetables and quality cichlid foods |
| Temperament | Generally peaceful for its size, but needs calm robust tank mates |
Use excellent filtration, regular water changes and open swimming room. Uaru often eat soft plants, so use hardy planting or plan the layout around wood, leaves, roots and robust decor. They do best in a calm South American display rather than an aggressive cichlid tank.
