The original type material was collected at depths from about 10 to 100 metres. Bills and Ribbink's ecological work places L. signatus with related sub-littoral mud-bottom hole dwellers. These records are a useful correction to the usual retail picture of a fish living only in a field of empty snail shells.
A peer-reviewed synthesis of Tanganyikan cichlid breeding classifies L. signatus as a substrate breeder that uses shells facultatively. In other words, a suitable shell can be accepted as a protected cavity, but the species is not restricted to shell use in the way an obligatory shell breeder is. The aquarium should offer a functional choice: several appropriately sized shells plus narrow, smooth, stable cave or tube alternatives that resemble a secure burrow entrance.
The substrate matters because these fish investigate and modify the lower territory. Use fine, smooth sand rather than sharp gravel. Avoid a deep unstable mud substitute in an aquarium; actual mud can create oxygen-poor pockets and make waste control difficult. A settled Signatus may hover close to the bottom, inspect entrances, move sand, retreat rapidly and patrol a compact area. Brief displays or a short chase from a chosen shelter can be normal cichlid boundary behaviour. The fish is not a schooling species, so keeping one is a valid choice. In a substantially larger aquarium, peaceful Tanganyika fish that spend most of their time in open or upper water may be considered if temperature, pH and hardness overlap. The layout must create separate habitat zones and allow each fish to escape view. Compatibility should be judged from the actual adult stock, not from a chart that treats every Lake Tanganyika cichlid as interchangeable.
Avoid other shell dwellers or lower-territory cichlids in a minimum tank. They compete directly for the same substrate and entrances. Avoid boisterous Malawi cichlids, large predators, persistent fin or body pickers and fish that need soft acidic water. Synodontis and sand-dwelling Tanganyikans can also cross the lower zone repeatedly; they are not automatic companions simply because they come from the same lake.
This fish should not be sold as shrimp safe. Small crustaceans fit its natural feeding profile, so shrimp, shrimplets and eggs cannot be guaranteed. Ordinary community tetras are also a poor default recommendation because many prefer different chemistry. A species with genuinely compatible hard-water needs might work in a large planned aquarium, but the correct question is about the exact fish and layout, not "all tetras" as a group.
