Meleagris Shell-Dweller (Neolamprologus stappersi) is a spotted Lake Tanganyika cichlid that claims empty snail shells as shelter and breeding territory. It is still widely traded under the later name Lamprologus meleagris, which appears in FishBase and older aquarium literature. Current Eschmeyer Catalog of Fishes treatment places that name in synonymy with N. stappersi.

This is not the striped Multi Shell-Dweller, Neolamprologus multifasciatus. The present fish has pearl-like spots across the brown body and fins and a different social plan. It can be fiercely territorial around shells, adult males may reach about 7 cm total length, and a proven pair or carefully planned harem needs more floor area than a casual nano colony.

Volume alone does not describe a suitable shell-dweller aquarium. The footprint must contain distinct shell territories, sand and visual barriers while leaving enough open water for every fish to retreat. A tall 60-litre tank with a narrow base can be less useful than a lower aquarium of the same volume.

Taxonomy and why two scientific names appear

Lamprologus meleagris was described by Heinz Buescher in 1991 from material near Bwassa. More recent Catalog of Fishes treatment considers it the same species as the earlier Neolamprologus stappersi, described by Pellegrin in 1927, so the older species name has priority. FishBase continues to present L. meleagris as valid, which explains why retailers and breeders still use it.

The honest approach is to show both. This listing uses Neolamprologus stappersi as the current catalog identity and retains Lamprologus meleagris as the recognised trade synonym. Neither name should be replaced with N. multifasciatus; that is a different striped colonial shell dweller.

Appearance and photo identity

The characteristic look is a brown to bronze body scattered with pale pearl-like spots. Similar spotting extends into the dorsal, anal and caudal fins. The head is relatively large, the mouth is built for taking small animal prey, and the eye stands out strongly against the darker face.

The four product images show that spotted pattern rather than the narrow vertical barring associated with multies. Lighting, stress, age, sex and background change contrast, so each fish will not match every dot in a photograph. Juveniles may arrive paler and develop stronger pattern as they settle.

Dispatch sizes and adult planning

The size selector describes approximate dispatch length. The 2.5-3 cm and 3-4 cm choices are both juvenile or subadult stages and still need the complete adult aquarium. A smaller fish is not suitable for a temporary jar or an uncycled nano tank.

FishBase gives a maximum of 7 cm total length. Males are generally larger and females smaller, but juveniles cannot always be sexed reliably. Size at dispatch is not a promise of sex, pair formation or final adult length.

Natural range near Bwassa

FishBase records the meleagris taxon only from Lake Tanganyika near Bwassa on the Democratic Republic of the Congo shore. This restricted locality matters: it is a Tanganyikan specialist, not a generic African cichlid that can be mixed with any hard-water species.

The fish is recorded in low-density shell areas rather than the enormous continuous shell beds associated with colonial multies. Empty gastropod shells provide shelter and breeding chambers, while open sand separates territories. The aquarium should copy the functional arrangement rather than turning the base into an ornamental pile with no boundaries.

Low-density shell habitat

Use separated shell clusters over fine sand. Each female or juvenile needs access to a suitable shell, with extras so a dominant fish cannot control the only safe refuge. Rocks, hardy plants or low barriers can break direct lines of sight between clusters.

More shells are not automatically better if they are packed so tightly that one male can patrol every entrance. Spread them across the useful floor and leave retreat routes. The keeper should be able to observe entrances and siphon open areas without collapsing the territories at every water change.

Aquarium dimensions and minimum size

Use a 60 x 40 cm footprint and roughly 60-80 litres as the conservative minimum for a proven compatible pair. For one male with two or three females, use an 80 cm aquarium of about 100 litres or larger. More space is needed if sex is uncertain or any tank mates are considered.

A 40-litre or 38-litre aquarium is not a reliable long-term recommendation for this species. It may hold a juvenile temporarily, but aggression can leave a subordinate fish with nowhere to escape. Pair, harem or juvenile group?

A proven pair is the simplest plan in the minimum aquarium. In a larger footprint, one male may defend an area containing several female shell territories. This harem structure is different from the multigenerational colony associated with N. multifasciatus.

Retail juveniles may not be sexable. Buying several can improve the chance of obtaining both sexes, but it also creates a future aggression problem if multiple males mature. Do this only with enough floor space and a cycled separation aquarium. Never assume that every group will sort itself out without injury.

Recognising aggression

Short displays, flared fins and a quick chase away from a shell can be normal territory defence. Constant pursuit across the whole aquarium, mouth damage, torn fins, a fish trapped at the surface or refusal to feed is not acceptable. Move the victim or aggressor before serious injury occurs.

Choosing safe shells

Use clean, unpainted gastropod shells that sink, have smooth edges and provide an opening large enough for the female. Escargot-style shells are commonly used. Avoid decorative shells coated with varnish, shells from polluted beaches, metal ornaments and anything with a sharp broken lip.

Provide at least two or three options for each fish, then distribute them into separated clusters. Rinse thoroughly and remove trapped air before placement. Do not glue a fish permanently into a fixed display; these cichlids move sand and may adjust the entrance themselves.

Fine sand and digging

Use fine, smooth sand deep enough for the fish to excavate around shells, usually around 3-5 cm in practical layouts. Gravel limits natural digging and can trap waste between shell clusters. Dark or very coarse material can also make observation difficult.

Place heavy rocks directly on a stable base before adding sand so digging cannot undermine them. Shells may be buried, uncovered or turned. That engineering is normal; repeatedly restoring the aquascape to the keeper's preferred arrangement removes the fish's main behavioural outlet.

Rocks, plants and sight barriers

Use a few stable rocks or hardy attached plants to separate territories, not a large rock wall that consumes all floor space. Anubias and Java fern can be attached outside the main shell field, while Vallisneria may work in protected areas if the chemistry suits it.

Plants are optional. The essentials are sand, safe shells, hard alkaline water and visual separation. Keep the front and feeding zones accessible so every fish can be counted and body condition can be checked.

Water chemistry

Maintain hard, alkaline water with a practical pH around 7.8-9.0 and hardness around 10-20 dGH. Carbonate hardness should provide useful buffering. Test the source water before purchase; many UK supplies are hard enough, while very soft regions may need a repeatable remineralisation plan.

Do not raise pH with an unmeasured handful of chemicals. A high number without buffering can fall rapidly, and abrupt chemistry change is more dangerous than a stable value near the lower practical end. The water matcher helps compare source water with the target range.

Temperature and oxygen

FishBase gives 24-28 C. Around 25-26 C is a useful everyday target when the source and display aquariums are stable. Avoid daily swings and match replacement water closely.

Warm alkaline water still needs good oxygenation. Keep the surface moving without creating a jet that blows food away from the shell area. During hot weather, increase safe aeration, reduce unnecessary lighting heat and feed conservatively. Do not use loose ice or sudden cold water.

Cycling before the fish arrives

Use a fully cycled aquarium with mature biological media. A fixed four or six weeks does not prove readiness; measured conversion of ammonia and nitrite does. The cycle tracker can organise test results.

Add shells and rocks before livestock so the layout can be tested for stability. Confirm the filter does not uncover the sand or trap a juvenile against an intake. An uncycled emergency tank is not a safe answer when aggression begins, so prepare separation capacity in advance.

Filtration and flow

A mature sponge, internal or external filter can work. Choose capacity for the full adult group and direct the outlet across the surface rather than into one shell entrance. Cover intakes where the smallest size could be drawn in.

Clean mechanical media when flow falls and preserve biological media. Do not replace every cartridge on a calendar. Rinse reusable media in removed aquarium water where appropriate and never let mature media dry during maintenance.

Weekly maintenance

Start with a measured partial water change each week, often 20-30%, then adjust from nitrate, stocking and feeding. Match temperature, pH and hardness. Siphon accessible waste between shell clusters without plunging the siphon into an occupied breeding shell.

Natural diet

FishBase describes a greedy feeder that takes mainly insect larvae. In the aquarium, use small quality carnivore or Tanganyika cichlid granules as the base, with frozen cyclops, daphnia, Artemia, mysis and suitable insect larvae for variety.

Food must reach the lower territory without being buried. Use small sinking or slow-sinking particles and spread them across more than one shell cluster. The larger male should not intercept every piece before females and juveniles can feed.

Portion control and body condition

Feed once or twice daily in portions cleared promptly. There is no universal pinch because particle density and fish size differ. Watch the slowest female or smallest juvenile, then adjust the next meal rather than adding a second large portion immediately.

A healthy fish should have a smooth body profile without a hollow belly or persistent swelling. Weight loss despite feeding, spitting food, white stringy faeces, isolation or rapid breathing needs investigation. Test water first and use a qualified aquatic veterinarian where possible.

Normal shell-oriented behaviour

Expect hovering near the bottom, short patrols, sand moving, shell inspection and rapid retreats. A settled female may spend long periods at one entrance. A male often patrols a wider area and displays with fins extended.

These fish do not school. Keeping several in view does not prove social comfort; each must have a usable territory. The most interesting display comes from boundaries, courtship and excavation, not from forcing a dense group into a small tank.

Breeding inside the shell

The female lays eggs inside a chosen shell. FishBase notes that a mature male may be too large to enter and fertilises from the opening. Eggs and early larvae remain hidden, so the first obvious sign may be a female guarding tightly or tiny fry appearing near the entrance.

Do not lift the shell to look for eggs. Keep water and feeding stable, protect the territory and observe from outside. A major rescape during courtship can end the attempt and trigger renewed aggression.

Fry care

Newly free-swimming fry need tiny foods such as freshly hatched Artemia nauplii, microworms or a reliable powdered fry food. Feed small amounts several times daily while protecting water quality. A sponge prefilter prevents fry from entering the intake.

Parents may defend fry, but a mixed aquarium adds predation risk and territorial pressure. Move fry only with matched water and a cycled grow-out tank. Keep identity records and do not distribute offspring as another shell-dweller species.

Species-only aquarium

A species-only setup is the safest and most rewarding plan for a pair or harem. It lets the keeper manage shells, sex ratio, feeding and fry without another bottom fish entering the territory. It also makes subtle aggression easier to see.

Do not interpret species-only as empty. Sand engineering, courtship and fry provide continual behaviour. Add visual barriers and a simple background rather than filling the aquarium with incompatible fish for movement.

Tank mates in a larger Tanganyika aquarium

In a much larger 120 cm+ aquarium, peaceful open-water Tanganyikans may be possible because they use a different zone. A carefully planned Blue Neon Paracyprichromis group is a more logical comparison than a Malawi peacock, but it still needs its own group, rock cover and swimming volume.

Small Julidochromis such as the Masked Julie use rock territories and may work only where rock and shell zones are widely separated. Avoid other shell dwellers, sand sifters and bottom fish in the same small footprint. Use the tank-mates tool as an initial screen, then assess adult territories and water chemistry.

How it differs from a Multi Shell-Dweller

The Multi Shell-Dweller is a smaller striped species known for dense multigenerational colonies. Meleagris/stappersi is spotted, larger, more individually territorial and associated with lower-density shell habitat.

Do not copy a multi stocking plan. A 40-litre colony recommendation, wall-to-wall shell bed and expectation that many juveniles will coexist indefinitely are not safe assumptions here.

Comparing other shell dwellers

The Ocellated Shell-Dweller and Brevis Shell-Dweller have their own pair and territory patterns. Lamprologus speciosus is another close comparison, while Neolamprologus similis is closer to the colonial multi style.

Sex differences and the limits of juvenile sexing

Adult males are normally larger and broader, while females remain smaller and spend more time close to an occupied shell. Mature males can also show stronger fin extension and patrol a wider area. Those differences develop over time; they are not a dependable way to label every 2.5-4 cm juvenile.

Do not select the larger shop size and assume it is male, or the smaller size and assume it is female. Growth rate, age, feeding history and social status overlap. A retailer can describe approximate size and visible condition, but a guaranteed pair requires proven adult behaviour or specialist venting, neither of which should be inferred from a product option.

Designing shell territories step by step

  1. Mark the useful floor after the filter, heater and stable rockwork are installed.
  2. Create two or more sand zones separated by a rock, plant or open gap.
  3. Place several shells in each zone with entrances facing different directions.
  4. Leave a clear route from every cluster to cover away from the dominant fish.
  5. Keep a feeding lane where particles can reach each territory.
  6. Photograph the layout before fish arrive so later digging can be understood.
  7. Watch which shells are chosen before adding or moving more.

A good layout gives the fish choices without making the aquarium impossible to clean. If every shell touches the next one, territories can overlap. If clusters are isolated in corners with no retreat, a subordinate may still be trapped. Adjust barriers from observed chasing, not from symmetry.

Preparing soft source water safely

Very soft tap water may lack both the general hardness and carbonate buffering needed for a stable Tanganyika aquarium. Start by testing tap pH, GH and KH on several days. Then choose one repeatable method, such as a measured commercial remineraliser or a carefully tested mix with mineral media, and prepare replacement water outside the aquarium.

Crushed coral or aragonite can add buffering, but the effect depends on existing chemistry, water movement and contact time. It is not an instant dose. Commercial salts also vary, so follow the product instructions and verify the resulting water with tests. Record the quantity used per bucket to avoid a different chemistry at every water change.

Evaporation and mineral concentration

Evaporation removes water but leaves minerals behind. Repeatedly topping up hard water can therefore raise dissolved solids over time even if pH looks stable. Top-up restores volume; it does not replace a partial water change or remove nitrate.

Measure GH, KH and nitrate periodically, especially during summer when fans increase evaporation. Use a consistent top-up source appropriate to the aquarium's chemistry. Never add a full water-change dose of mineral salts to the display simply because the water level has fallen.

Power cuts, filter stops and heatwaves

During a power cut, oxygen becomes the immediate concern. Stop feeding, keep the lid in place, preserve temperature and agitate the surface safely if the outage continues. Do not open an external filter after a long stagnant period and pour foul water back into the aquarium; inspect and clean it before restart.

After power returns, check temperature, breathing, ammonia, nitrite and filter flow. A mature filter can lose oxygen quickly when stationary. Restore circulation gently and keep feeding light until tests confirm stability.

In a heatwave, room cooling, safe surface movement and reduced lighting are preferable to sudden chilling. Warm water carries less oxygen and increases metabolism. If the aquarium reaches the upper range, increase aeration and watch every fish rather than trying to force an immediate multi-degree drop.

First-month observation plan

Days one to three

Keep lights subdued, feed lightly and confirm every fish can reach a shell. Test ammonia and nitrite daily. Watch breathing and ensure the filter outlet has not shifted sand into an entrance.

Days four to seven

Begin comparing feeding access and territory use. A fish that never leaves the surface or equipment corner is not simply shy. Add a visual barrier or separate it before damage accumulates.

Weeks two and three

Record which shells are occupied, the longest chases and each fish's body condition. Adjust food placement so the smallest animal receives a share. Check nitrate, pH, GH and KH before the first routine water change.

Week four

Decide whether the social plan is working. A stable pair or harem should allow every fish to feed and use a safe territory. If one male dominates the whole base, use the prepared separation aquarium rather than adding more fish as a distraction.

Health and warning signs

A healthy fish holds position confidently, feeds promptly and has open fins and steady breathing. Loss of appetite, a pinched belly, clamped fins, repeated flashing, surface hanging or isolation away from every shell needs attention.

Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, temperature and pH before adding medication. Check aggression and body condition. Similar signs can come from water, injury, parasites or internal disease, so random treatment may hide the cause or damage the biological filter.

Quarantine

Quarantine new fish for several weeks in a cycled aquarium with matching hard alkaline water, sand and at least one safe shell each. A bare tank without refuge can produce stress that looks like illness. Use dedicated nets and siphons.

It is normal for a new fish to hide, but each individual should begin exploring and feeding. Count them morning and evening, and confirm that one fish is not being held at the surface. Feed modestly while the filter responds to the added bioload.

Test ammonia and nitrite daily after a meaningful stocking increase. Check temperature and pH at the same time of day. Do not rearrange shells repeatedly to make the fish more visible.

Is this the right fish for your aquarium?

Frequently asked questions

Is Lamprologus meleagris the same as Neolamprologus stappersi?

Current Eschmeyer Catalog of Fishes treatment places L. meleagris in synonymy with N. stappersi. FishBase still lists the former separately, so both names remain common in the aquarium trade.

Is this Neolamprologus multifasciatus?

No. The Multi Shell-Dweller is a separate striped colonial species. This fish is spotted, grows larger and needs a pair or harem territory plan.

What aquarium size does a pair need?

Use a 60 x 40 cm footprint and roughly 60-80 litres as the conservative minimum for a proven pair. More space is needed for uncertain sex, a harem or tank mates.

How many shells should I provide?

Provide at least two or three suitable options for each fish and spread them into separated clusters. Every female needs a safe breeding shell and no dominant fish should control the only refuge.

Can I keep a juvenile group?

Only with a larger aquarium and a cycled separation plan. Sex may be uncertain, and surplus males can become dangerously aggressive as they mature.

What water does it need?

What does it eat?

Natural records emphasise insect larvae. In aquariums, use small complete carnivore granules with frozen cyclops, daphnia, Artemia, mysis and suitable insect larvae.

Can it live with Malawi cichlids?

No ordinary mixed Malawi setup is recommended. The species has a specialised Tanganyika shell territory, different social plan and different compatible tank-mate choices.

How does it breed?

The female lays eggs inside a shell. A mature male may be too large to enter and fertilises from the opening. Fry remain protected inside before emerging near the shell.

Can it live in a normal community aquarium?

Not with soft-water tetras, guppies, Corydoras or random bottom fish. A species setup is safest; a large carefully zoned Tanganyika aquarium is the advanced alternative.
