A large axolotl from a mixed-colour batch

The axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) is a salamander that keeps its feathery external gills and fully aquatic life into adulthood. Its native range is the Valley of Mexico, associated with the lakes of Xochimilco and Chalco; aquarium animals are captive-bred. This listing is for one XXL axolotl — larger than our 12–15 cm size — chosen from a mixed-colour batch.

The colour is not selectable. The photo shows one of the colours that may arrive (a pink-white animal with red gills); others in the batch can be different colour forms. If you need a particular colour, choose a colour-named axolotl listing instead.

What you receive

One quantity is one live XXL axolotl; the colour is whichever animal is picked from the mixed batch, and sex is not guaranteed. Because it is already large, have the full-size aquarium running and matured before ordering.

Aquarium and water

Axolotls need cool water: OATA gives 10–22°C, so a heated tropical aquarium is not suitable. Use a long, wide aquarium with efficient filtration and gentle flow — OATA’s guidance for a small group is at least 100 litres — a bare floor or fine sand (never small gravel that can be swallowed), shade from caves or plants, and a lid. pH 7.0–8.0 and 8–18 dGH are OATA’s broad group-level values.

Feeding

A carnivore: feed sinking axolotl pellets or sticks and earthworms, with occasional frozen foods. Adults usually eat every two to three days; remove uneaten food.

Tank mates and behaviour

Keep axolotls on their own. Fish nip the gills, small fish are eaten and tropical temperatures are harmful. Do not mix axolotls of very different sizes.

Follow the arrival sequence before releasing the axolotl

Tropical Fish Co’s delivery and Live Arrival Guarantee policy explains the packing and arrival procedure. Livestock is hand-bagged in pure oxygen and placed in an insulated poly box, with a heat pack when the weather calls for it. Someone must be at the address to receive the parcel because live animals cannot be left unattended.

  1. Receive the parcel in person and start filming before opening it. Show the parcel still sealed with the outer box visible.
  2. Open the parcel in one continuous take. Keep filming until the axolotl can be seen inside the sealed bag before anything is disturbed.
  3. Float the bag for 20–30 minutes so the temperature equalises slowly.
  4. Do not pour the bag water into the aquarium. Release the axolotl without adding transport water to the established system.

If a Live Arrival Guarantee claim is required, contact us on the same day with the order number and the continuous unboxing video. Before the parcel arrives, confirm that ammonia and nitrite read zero and that the aquarium matches the water values on this page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I choose the colour?

No. This XXL axolotl comes from a mixed-colour batch and the colour is not selectable; the photo shows one of the colours that may arrive.

How big is XXL?

XXL is larger than our 12–15 cm size. OATA describes axolotls reaching around 30 cm as adults.

Do axolotls need a heater?

Usually not. OATA gives 10–22°C; heated tropical aquariums are too warm.

Can axolotls live with fish?

No. They belong in a species-only aquarium.

What customers say about ordering from us

I have a small group of long finned mountain minnows. So was delighted to be able to order ten of this variety to increase the genetics in my tank . The ones I recieved are healthy but it’s to early to give a verdict on wether they are of a long finned type since they are small currently.

100% success travel and "installation". Pleased with quality of purchase. The Siamese fighter a bit "shy" so have not yet seen him at his best yet but looking good. Happy customer. GG
