Linn's Haplochromis (Nimbochromis linni) is a large predatory hap from Lake Malawi. It is often traded under the older Haplochromis name, but the accepted scientific name used here is Nimbochromis linni. This is a specialist cichlid for experienced keepers planning a spacious hard-water Malawi aquarium, not a peaceful community fish.
| Scientific name | Nimbochromis linni |
|---|---|
| Adult size | Up to around 25 cm |
| Minimum aquarium | 450 litres or larger for adult planning |
| Temperature | 24-28 C |
| pH | 7.5-8.6, hard alkaline water |
| Temperament | Predatory, territorial and semi-aggressive |
| Diet | Carnivorous cichlid pellets plus frozen or meaty foods |
Plan the aquarium around adult size and behaviour. Use a strong filter, stable hard alkaline water, open swimming space and a rock layout that breaks up sight lines. Juveniles can be grown on carefully, but this species should only be chosen when the long-term adult aquarium is available.
Keep water quality high with regular water changes and avoid soft, acidic community setups. This fish is best kept by aquarists already comfortable with larger Malawi cichlids.
Feed a carnivore-leaning Malawi cichlid diet: quality pellets as the staple, supported with frozen mysis, krill, shrimp and similar meaty foods. Avoid feeder fish and do not overfeed rich foods.
Choose robust Lake Malawi haps or large Synodontis catfish that can handle the same hard-water conditions. Avoid small fish, shrimp, peaceful community species, slow long-finned fish and much smaller cichlids.
