Haplochromis aeneocolor
A striking Lake Victoria cichlid with changing colours and lively personality. Best kept in a species or carefully planned African setup.
Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
Haplochromis aeneocolor is a beautiful Lake Victoria cichlid prized for its subtle metallic sheen and the way males develop stronger colour as they mature. Offered here at around 3-4 cm, these juveniles are ideal for aquarists looking to grow on a group and watch their behaviour and colouration develop over time.
This species is best suited to a well-maintained African cichlid aquarium, ideally with plenty of swimming space, stable water conditions and a thoughtful stocking plan. Like many Lake Victoria haplochromines, it can be territorial, especially when breeding, but it is generally manageable in the right setup. If you are looking for a fish with character, movement and a genuinely interesting natural history, Haplochromis aeneocolor is an excellent choice.
All fish are supplied with our live arrival guarantee and fast UK delivery, helping ensure your new cichlids arrive in excellent condition and ready to settle into their new home.

Haplochromis aeneocolor originates from Lake Victoria in East Africa, one of the world’s most famous cichlid habitats. Lake Victoria’s fish fauna evolved rapidly and produced a huge variety of closely related species, each adapted to slightly different niches. This species belongs to that remarkable group of haplochromine cichlids.
In the wild, Lake Victoria cichlids inhabit rocky edges, transitional zones and open areas near structure, where they feed, establish territories and breed. Water in these habitats is typically warm, alkaline and well oxygenated. Replicating those conditions in the aquarium is the key to long-term success. A stable environment with good filtration and regular maintenance will help this fish thrive and display its best colours.
For a healthy and confident Haplochromis aeneocolor, aim for a tank of at least 180 litres, with more space preferred if keeping a group or mixing with other cichlids. A longer aquarium is especially useful, as it allows fish to establish territories and reduces constant confrontation.
Use a fine sand or smooth gravel substrate and add rockwork to create caves, crevices and visual barriers. Open swimming space is also important. A balanced layout with both open areas and structured zones works best. Hardy plants can be used if protected from digging, but many keepers prefer a rock-focused African cichlid aquascape.
Recommended water values are:
Strong filtration, regular water changes and consistent water quality are essential. As with all cichlids, avoid sudden changes in temperature or chemistry. Juveniles may be kept in groups, but as they mature you should monitor behaviour closely and be prepared to separate overly dominant individuals if needed.
Haplochromis aeneocolor is an omnivorous cichlid that does best on a varied, high-quality diet. In captivity, offer a staple of premium cichlid pellets or granules designed for African cichlids, supported by frozen and live foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp and mysis. Vegetable matter and spirulina-based foods can also be included to support balanced nutrition.
Feed small amounts once or twice daily, only what the fish will consume in a few minutes. Overfeeding can quickly affect water quality and may lead to digestive issues. A varied diet helps maintain colour, condition and breeding readiness.
This species is best kept with other robust African cichlids of similar size and temperament, ideally from Lake Victoria or other compatible hard-water setups. Good tank mates may include similarly sized haplochromines, some hardy Victorian cichlids and other non-overly aggressive species that can hold their own.
Because Haplochromis aeneocolor can become territorial, avoid very timid fish, tiny community species and long-finned tank mates that may be harassed. Mixing with highly aggressive Mbuna or much larger predatory cichlids is also not recommended unless you have a very large, carefully managed aquarium. As always with cichlids, individual temperament varies, so aquascape and stocking density matter a great deal.
For best results, keep a close eye on behaviour during introduction and provide plenty of hiding places and line-of-sight breaks. A well-planned group setup often works better than a sparse tank with too few territories.
