Overview

Haplochromis hippo point salmon sp. is an attractive, lesser-seen Lake Victoria cichlid offered here at around 4-5 cm. Like many haplochromines, it is an active, intelligent fish that becomes more impressive as it matures, with males typically developing stronger colour and a more defined shape. This species is best suited to aquarists who enjoy African cichlids and want something a little different from the usual mbuna or peacock cichlids.

In the aquarium, these fish are best kept in a carefully planned cichlid community with plenty of space, rockwork and open swimming areas. They are not ideal for small community tanks, but in the right setup they can be rewarding, lively and full of character. At Tropical Fish Co, we supply healthy livestock with fast UK delivery and a live arrival guarantee for peace of mind.

Please note that colouration and exact patterning may vary between individuals, especially at this juvenile size. As they mature, males often become more vivid and territorial, while females remain more subdued.

Origin & Natural Habitat

This fish originates from Lake Victoria, East Africa, one of the world’s most famous African rift lakes and home to a remarkable diversity of haplochromine cichlids. In the wild, these fish inhabit rocky shorelines, transitional zones and open water near cover, where they feed, display and establish territories.

Lake Victoria species are adapted to warm, alkaline water with stable conditions and plenty of dissolved minerals. Their natural environment is bright, open and highly structured, with rocks, crevices and sand patches creating territories and visual barriers. Recreating this style of habitat in the aquarium helps reduce stress and encourages natural behaviour.

Because many Lake Victoria cichlids have evolved in specialised niches, they can be sensitive to poor water quality and sudden changes. Consistency is key: stable temperature, strong filtration and regular maintenance will help this species thrive.

Tank Setup & Water Parameters

A spacious aquarium is strongly recommended. For a single male with several females or a small group, a tank of 250 litres or more is a sensible starting point, with larger aquariums being even better. These fish appreciate room to establish territories and swim freely.

Use a setup that combines open swimming space with rock formations and caves. Smooth rocks stacked securely can create visual breaks and reduce aggression. A sand or fine gravel substrate is suitable, and live plants are usually not essential; many aquarists instead focus on rockwork and robust filtration. If you do use plants, choose hardy species and protect roots from digging.

Water movement should be moderate to strong, with excellent oxygenation. A high-quality external filter or powerful internal filtration system is recommended. Perform regular partial water changes to keep nitrate low and water conditions stable. This species does best in hard, alkaline water, so avoid soft, acidic conditions.

Recommended parameters: temperature 24-27°C, pH 7.8-8.6, with hard water and stable alkalinity. As with all cichlids, acclimation should be careful and gradual. Avoid overstocking and do not introduce this fish into immature tanks.

Feeding Guide

Haplochromis hippo point salmon sp. is an omnivorous cichlid that benefits from a varied diet. In the wild, haplochromines feed on small invertebrates, algae, plankton and other available foods depending on species and habitat. In captivity, offer a balanced feeding regime that supports colour, growth and digestive health.

Good staple foods include high-quality cichlid pellets or granules, ideally with a protein level suited to omnivorous African cichlids. Supplement this with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, mysis and chopped krill in moderation. Vegetable matter is also useful, including spirulina-based foods and occasional blanched greens where appropriate.

Feed small amounts once or twice daily, only as much as the fish will consume quickly. Overfeeding can lead to water quality issues and digestive problems. A varied diet is especially important for juveniles and breeding adults.

Tank Mates / Compatibility

This species is best kept with other African cichlids of similar size and temperament, ideally from Lake Victoria or other compatible hard-water setups. Choose tank mates that are robust enough to handle the active nature of haplochromines but not so aggressive that they dominate the aquarium.

Good companions may include other Lake Victoria cichlids, selected non-overly aggressive Aulonocara in larger systems, and similarly sized hardy African species where water requirements overlap. Keep an eye on male-to-male aggression, especially in smaller aquariums or when multiple territorial species are housed together.

Avoid slow, delicate fish, very small species that may be harassed, and highly aggressive cichlids that could outcompete or injure them. Mixing with mbuna can be risky unless the tank is very large and carefully planned, as mbuna often occupy different aggression levels and feeding styles.

As a general rule, the more space and structure you provide, the better this fish will do in a community setting. Overstocking can sometimes reduce aggression, but only when filtration and maintenance are excellent.
