Malawi Squeaker (Synodontis njassae) is a hardy, striking Lake Malawi catfish that spends much of its time upside down and adds unique nocturnal activity to larger cichlid aquariums. Endemic to Lake Malawi in East Africa, this species is prized for its distinctive appearance, upside-down swimming behavior, and hardy adaptability. Now available for sale UK from Tropical Fish Co, this unusual catfish is ideal for the Lake Malawi community aquarium keeper.
The Malawi Squeaker typically reaches around 19.2 cm in total length, making it a medium-sized catfish. The body is robust and slightly compressed, with a mottled pattern of dark markings on a pale background. The fins are well-developed and the long barbels are used for foraging. Like other Synodontis species, this fish often swims upside down beneath surfaces. Healthy specimens have bright, clear eyes and smooth, undamaged barbels.
In the wild, Synodontis njassae is endemic to Lake Malawi in East Africa, where it inhabits rocky areas and sandy substrates. These waters are typically hard, alkaline, warm, and well-oxygenated. The fish spend much of their time hiding among rocks during the day and foraging at night for invertebrates, algae, and organic matter. They often swim upside down beneath rocky overhangs and submerged structures.
A spacious aquarium of at least 250 litres is recommended for a Malawi Squeaker, as they can grow quite large and are best kept with robust cichlids. Use a fine sand substrate and incorporate plenty of rockwork, caves, and overhanging structures to provide hiding places and surfaces for upside-down swimming. Ensure strong filtration and moderate water movement to maintain high oxygen levels and excellent water quality. A secure lid is essential, as Synodontis catfish are strong jumpers.
The Malawi Squeaker is an omnivore and thrives on a varied sinking diet. Offer quality catfish pellets as a staple, supplemented with frozen or live meaty foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, mysis, and chopped earthworms, with occasional vegetable matter or algae-based foods. Feed once or twice daily in the evening or at night when the fish is most active.
This catfish is semi-aggressive and best kept as a single specimen or with robust Lake Malawi cichlids of similar size. They are nocturnal and spend much of the day hiding among rocks, becoming active at night to forage. They often swim upside down beneath rocky overhangs and surfaces. Males can be territorial, especially toward other bottom-dwelling fish. Due to their size and semi-aggressive nature, choose tankmates carefully.
The Malawi Squeaker is suitable for a Lake Malawi cichlid aquarium with other robust fish. Good tankmates include Lake Malawi cichlids of similar size and temperament, robust, non-tiny community fish that will not be eaten, and other peaceful to semi-aggressive bottom dwellers of appropriate size. Avoid very small fish, shrimp and small invertebrates, overly aggressive fish that may harass it, and slow, delicate fish with long fins.
Breeding the Malawi Squeaker is uncommon in home aquaria and may require large, well-structured tanks and specific water conditions. Little reliable captive-breeding information is available.
