Freshwater angelfish are tall South American cichlids, not small community fish. OATA gives 120 litres as an industry floor for a compatible pair and says the aquarium must be sufficiently tall. We prefer planning around roughly 200 litres, a 100 × 40 cm footprint and about 50 cm height for an adult pair, with more space and an exit plan for a group.

Smoke Angelfish is a domestic colour strain of Pterophyllum scalare, the classic freshwater angelfish. It needs height, calm tank mates and stable warm water, and mature pairs can become territorial.
Use a tall aquarium with vertical plants or wood, gentle flow and open turning space. Young angelfish can be grown in groups; bonded pairs may claim a territory when breeding.
Offer quality flakes, cichlid micro pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp and daphnia. Feed small varied meals and keep water quality stable.
Choose calm medium-sized tank mates such as larger tetras, Corydoras and peaceful rainbowfish. Avoid tiny fish that may be eaten and active fin nippers such as tiger barbs.
