What makes a killifish annual?

Annual killifish come from seasonal habitats where the water can disappear. Embryos survive the dry period in suitable substrate and resume development when conditions allow. The name describes that life cycle; it does not mean every aquarium fish dies on its first birthday. Nothobranchius are annual, but many other killifish are not.

Explore the Nothobranchius offers
Plan eggs separately from the fish

These are fish offers, rather than a general egg kit. Check the number supplied and any stated sex; ordering two does not establish a sexed or compatible pair. To maintain a line, arrange its spawning substrate and learn how to assess the eggs before breeding. Moisture, temperature and incubation time differ between species; there is no universal drying period or guaranteed hatch date.

Ask about a breeding or supply question
Build the aquarium around the named fish

Wolterstorff’s pearlfish and a small Notho should not inherit one tank size or companion list. Compare adult space, temperature and social needs for the fish you choose. Ask what the current stock eats, and make sure suitable food reaches every fish. Keep full species and locality labels with breeding lines; older Cynolebias trade names cover several different genera.
