Its pearl-white to faint blue body and dark edging along the dorsal fin distinguish this trade form from the familiar yellow form. Labidochromis caeruleus occurs naturally in several colour forms around Lake Malawi. “Electric White” is a white or pale blue-white trade form, not an albino label. The fish should retain normally pigmented dark eyes, while dark fin edging can become more visible as it settles and matures. Individual colour, fin markings and sex can vary, so representative gallery images cannot guarantee the exact appearance of the fish supplied.
Do not substitute the higher-volume term “Electric Yellow Cichlid” for this offer. That name normally describes the yellow form of the same species and would misrepresent the fish shown and supplied here.
FishBase gives a minimum aquarium length of 80 cm for the species. For a practical Malawi group or mixed mbuna aquarium, plan a larger system of at least 200 litres with enough floor area for separate territories. Aquarium shape, rockwork, filtration and total stocking matter as much as the litre figure; a tall but short aquarium is not an equivalent substitute for adequate length.
Build stable rockwork with caves, narrow retreats and broken lines of sight. Leave open swimming space and secure the rocks before adding substrate because mbuna may dig. Strong biological filtration, good oxygenation and regular maintenance are essential. Add fish only after the aquarium is fully cycled, with ammonia and nitrite at zero.
Keep the water stable at 23–26°C, pH 8.0–8.6 and about 12–18 dGH. These targets combine the species temperature range reported by FishBase with OATA’s UK Malawi-cichlid guidance for hard, alkaline water. Test temperature, pH, hardness, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate regularly. Stability is safer than repeatedly adjusting the aquarium to chase an edge value.
Labidochromis caeruleus is an omnivore, not a strict herbivore. Offer a varied Malawi cichlid food with plant material, supplemented by modest portions of appropriately sized live or frozen invertebrate foods. Feed small amounts that are eaten promptly and avoid rich, heavy feeding. Watch each fish eat, especially in a busy cichlid aquarium where dominant fish can monopolise food.
This species is often described as one of the milder mbuna, but it remains territorial and should not be sold as a peaceful general-community fish. Keep it with carefully chosen Lake Malawi cichlids of compatible size, water requirements and feeding needs, or with suitable Synodontis in a sufficiently large aquarium. Avoid small peaceful fish, slow feeders, long-finned species, large predators and fish requiring soft or acidic water.
FishBase advises more females than males, but juveniles and trade fish may be difficult to sex reliably. Because this listing supplies one unsexed fish, do not assume that ordering two will create a compatible pair. Plan extra space, visual barriers and a safe separation option if persistent chasing occurs.
Electric White Cichlids are maternal mouthbrooders: the female carries the eggs and developing fry in her mouth. Sex cannot be guaranteed from colour alone, particularly in younger fish. Breeding should be attempted only in an appropriately stocked Malawi aquarium with a plan for aggression, female recovery and the resulting fry.
