Glowing golden colour gives the Gardner's Killifish Gold (Aphyosemion gardneri gold) its name and its appeal. This is the gold strain of a small West African killifish - around 3.5cm fully grown - and its warm tones and graceful finnage make it a striking centrepiece for a planted nano aquarium.
Peaceful and engaging, it nonetheless sits at a moderate care level because of the conditions it prefers. It occupies the middle of the water column in soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water, and feeds as a carnivore on small meaty foods. A densely planted tank with a secure cover suits it well, since killifish will jump given the chance.
With a typical lifespan of about three years it is one of the longer-lived members of its group, making it a rewarding choice for keepers who enjoy watching a single species thrive.
A planted, securely covered nano tank is the natural home for this gold strain. Twenty litres or more, densely planted and with a tight-fitting lid, gives it both cover and protection against jumping, while the water sits between 22 and 26°C with a pH of 5.8 to 7.2 and hardness from 0 to 15 dGH. Soft, gently filtered conditions suit its small size.
Feeding follows its carnivorous nature - small live and frozen foods keep the gold colour rich. With a lifespan of around three years it is on the longer-lived side for the group, rewarding a keeper who enjoys observing a single species closely as it goes about its quiet, middle-water routine.
It is best kept species-only or with very small, peaceful, non-competitive tank mates such as peaceful snails. Avoid large or aggressive fish, fin-nipping species, fast boisterous feeders, and very small fry or shrimp that may be eaten.
